The iconic 494-inch Chevy-powered Thunder Road cars are back and now engineered for safety, aerodynamics, driver comfort, and speed on today's world-class racetracks.
The tarmac shook in the mid-1960s to early-1970s when Chevy and Porsche powered Group 7 Can-Am cars took to the track. They were at the time the world’s most powerful road racing cars; the Canadian-American Challenge Cup series the most exciting events on the circuit. Often referred to as the “Camelot of motorsports” and the age of heroic racing machines, Can-Am racing is back - sort of! Enter the NuArt Can-Am cars and Unlimited Racing Championship series.
In 1966 to 1974, Can-Am came to mean “anything goes.” Enthusiasts and press would await every event’s surprising new innovations and spectacular record breaking.
The big-block aluminum Chevrolet engines grew to be the most powerful domestic powerplants that road racing had ever seen. Porsche’s legendary 917 turbo cars were the ultimate “bad boys.” Body shapes and aerodynamic wings were unrestricted. It was the era of build whatever you want, resulting in some of the most unpredictable, ground-shaking, hairiest, scariest machines. They were the fastest road racing cars on the planet – faster than Formula 1!
The NuArt Can-Am racecar spawns a new ALMS (American Le Mans Series) support race series, developed as an homage to America’s halcyon sports car racing years. It is essentially a rebirth of historic Can-Am, with visually stunning, retro-looking cars constructed of the latest materials supported by modern design and engineering innovations. These thoroughbred racers are ground-up new, engineered for safety, aerodynamics, driver comfort and speed.
Powered by pro-built, 10-to-1 compression 494 cubic-inch Chevy big block engines delivering 700-plus horsepower, NuArt Can-Am cars can easily replicate the performance of the originals. Fuel delivery is via a patented electronic injection system that features drive-by-wire throttle, and scalable power settings at 300, 450, 600, and 700-plus horsepower. There’s traction control for a safe and easy learning curve. All of this is contained in a tall-stack injection package that has the visual appeal of an original fuel-injected Chevy Can-Am powerplant.
