TRAINING WHEELS: FORMULA ONE, INDYCAR & WRC!

- Rabu, 08 Juli 2015 No Comments

Almost half of drivers on the current F1 grid have been coached in

standard Vauxhall road cars.

Rob Wilson is possibly one of the most important players in Formula One racing that you’ve never heard of. Based at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground in South Leicestershire, UK, Rob is instrumental in carving split seconds from the lap times of at least 12 drivers on the current grid. His key training weapon is a standard Vauxhall Astra!

As improbable as it seems, Rob’s Astra Sports Tourer – along with a GTC and Insignia Sports Tourer – are perfect for his training sessions, which also benefit drivers from Indycar, DTM and even WRC.

“The Vauxhalls will do everything that an F1 car does dynamically, just at a far lower speed,” said Rob, right. “This allows me to explain the physics behind what the car is doing out on the track in real time, which I’d never manage in a performance car. The other advantage is that the driver’s engineer can ride along too, and this is crucial since a change in driving technique could result in a different setup for the race car.’

Rob’s techniques, which have been honed from his own long and successful career in motorsport, assume a very high baseline in driving ability at the start of his sessions. The focus is on cornering and braking weights, and how to minimize both by adopting sometimes counter-intuitive cornering lines; even gear changing comes under the microscope.

“Many top drivers have never heel-and-toed during down-changes, because they’ve never needed to. But the discipline makes them appreciate the importance of smoothness and how it can have a positive effect on the balance of the car into corners,” said Rob.

So of all the production cars Rob could have chosen over the past 15 years that he’s been running his sessions, why has he opted for Vauxhalls? “Stability, handling predictability and durability – these seem to come as standard in every Vauxhall I’ve used,” said Rob. “The cars have an unbelievably hard time out on our track, as drivers try to beat my lap time, so I need to know that they’re not going to break, or do something unexpected when we’re cornering at over 100 mph.”

And Rob’s road wheels for his 200-mile daily commute between his home in London and Bruntingthorpe? “A Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer – after spending a day being looked after on the limit in Vauxhalls there’s really no other option!”

WRL: BEST PART OF AMATEUR ROAD RACING!

- Selasa, 30 Juni 2015 No Comments

I don't do much amateur road racing these days. But I really should. The ending alone makes it worthwhile and no matter how many times you see it,

it never gets old, blogs Stephen Cox.

The World Racing League held its 16-hour amateur endurance race recently at Texas World Speedway and league president Joey Todd was kind enough to hook me up with an amazing team called Rocksteady Racing.  Not only did a thrilling turn of events take us to the podium with only 40 minutes remaining, but I got to experience one of the finest moments in sports.

Endurance racing is a grind. It takes weeks to prepare the car for a 16-hour event. The team then travels to the venue sets up shop, unloads the trucks, and checks into a hotel. Friday is a practice day. You're hustling from 6 am until 10 pm. Sometimes later. Then comes two days of hard racing, with the crew working on the car day and night. The attrition rate is brutal.

By the time the race comes to its final lap, you are physically and emotionally exhausted. But when the flagman gives the “one lap to go” signal and reaches for the checkered flag, an amazing thing happens... everyone ignores the rule book, climbs over the pit wall and walks out toward the race track.

Mechanics drop their wrenches. Crew chiefs climb down from their perches. Wives, girlfriends, kids and whole families jump over the wall and walk toward the track in a massive wave of humanity. Not a soul remains in the garage area and the pits are abandoned.

The inside wall of the front straightaway is lined with hundreds of people, and everyone is waving something. A flag, a shirt, a cap... anything colorful that will fly in the wind. A thousand cameras are pointed at the overall winner as the checkered flag is thrown. Corner workers fly every flag they can hold. One particularly enthusiastic official in Turn 13 stood atop the tire barrier and waved his flags as high as he could reach. Safety crews abandon their vehicles and rush to the track to salute the field.

But it's not just the winner who is honored. Every single car that crosses the finish line – in first place or last – is cheered by a thousand hoarse voices. The emotion of that moment is very much like the feeling experienced by fans on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500, though on a much smaller scale.

In order to understand it, you can't just show up at the end. It won't be the same. You must be there for the entire event. You have to bleed a little and have some skin in the game. But it's worth it. There are few moments in sports that surpass the final lap of an endurance race.

BARN FIND: SHELBY GROUP 2 SCCA MUSTANG!

- Selasa, 05 Mei 2015 No Comments

Stephen Cox blogs about the sixteenth ’66 Mustang A/Sedan racer built by Shelby,

but never raced.

Originally painted in Ford's familiar Wimbledon White, the car was loaded with go-fast equipment during a lengthy process when it was converted from assembly line stock into a professional racing machine. Like the fifteen cars that preceded it, a K-Code 289/271 small-block powered this Shelby Mustang. In reality, it probably had far more power than that since Shelby's small block Fords routinely registered well beyond 400 horsepower on the dyno.

The car would leap out of corners under acceleration. The Borg-Warner close-ratio four-speed transmission was linked to a 3.89 rear with Detroit Locker differential. The suspension was state of the art for 1966, including lowered front A-arms, front sway bar, with Pitman and idler arms borrowed directly from Shelby's ultra successful GT350R racecars. The factory black interior was mostly stripped, replaced by a racing seat with three-inch safety belts, an 8,000-rpm tachometer and a four-point roll cage.

Ironically, when the final Shelby SCCA Group 2 Mustang was completed in the late spring of 1966, it was delivered to its first owner but never raced. The car was repainted red, driven infrequently until 1977, and then unceremoniously put into storage. It was a dubious ending for one of the mightiest Trans-Am racers of its time. But at the same time, the odd career of this unemployed racecar is precisely what makes it so valuable today.

After sitting idly for 37 years, the Shelby Group 2 Mustang was given a detailed mechanical inspection last summer, followed by an extremely limited restoration. The oil pan was dropped and cleaned, the entire brake system was rebuilt, the tires were replaced and the engine treated to some head work. To preserve the amazing originality of the car, no further work was done. It remains as Shelby built it in 1966 and as driven by its first owner until the mid-1970s.

Such limited restorations are the latest trend in collector automobiles, offering several enormous advantages. Expenses are dramatically reduced. The history of the car is carefully preserved. And it's never too late to go back and restore the car to perfection if a future owner chooses to do so. But as they say, “it's only original once.”

The final Shelby Mustang Group 2 racer ever built now appears just as it was found in storage last summer after nearly four decades. The car will be publicly displayed for the first time at the upcoming Mecum auto auction in Indianapolis, May 12-16, where it will be offered for sale as one of the truly rare pieces of Shelby motor racing history.
