McLAREN SUPERCARS: GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY!

- Senin, 21 Januari 2013 No Comments

‘Life is measured in achievement, not in years alone,’ said 27-year-old Bruce McLaren in 1964, when his new company, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, was

less than a year old.

In those days, fewer than half a dozen loyal souls, who slogged across the world to race his cars, shared Bruce’s vision. Nowadays, the McLaren Group employs more than 2,000 people,

all of whom still share Bruce’s ideals of combining sportsmanship with solid engineering

practice and cutting-edge technical expertise. On September 2nd 2013, the McLaren Group

will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

From the McLaren 50 logos, below, they’ll proudly sport on team shirts, through specially commissioned heritage video features, to the launch of the new MP4-28 Formula 1 car with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez on January 31st, every lap, every corner, every mile and every road they take will be an opportunity to revel in McLaren’s present while recalling a glorious 50-year past.

Ron Dennis CBE, executive chairman, McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive, said: “McLaren’s history is long and storied, but McLaren’s legacy is harder to define – and that’s because it’s still being vividly written every day by the dedicated men and women who work at the McLaren Technology Centre.”

“This is a book that’s still being written, and that, perhaps, is the greatest legacy of McLaren.”

DELTA FORCE TAKES THE FIFTH: PETIT LE MANS!

- Minggu, 21 Oktober 2012 No Comments

Nissan’s DeltaWing returns to the country it was built in; scores its first finish.

Mission accomplished! The Nissan DeltaWing had one goal entering its North American debut at Petit Le Mans: Score a race finish. Truly an International project, the Nissan-powered, Dan Gurney AAR-built racecar was driven by Nissan’s first GT Academy graduate, Lucas Ordonez with American Gunnar Jeannette sharing the driving.

The team, below, not only completed the 1,000-mile journey at Road Atlanta, but American Gunnar Jeannette and Spaniard Lucas Ordoñez demonstrated stunning pace throughout the race to finish Fifth in the endurance classic.

Running Unclassified as an invitational entry for the final round of the American Le Mans Series, the Nissan DeltaWing team was forced to start off the back of the grid and subsequently lost additional position by missing out on a number safety car "wave arounds" throughout the race. The unique turbochaged 1.6-liter Nissan DIG-T-powered machine eventually crossed the line three laps down from the P2 class-winning car.

Jeannette started the race for the DeltaWing squad and immediately began a charge through the pack, passing eight cars on the opening lap. By the time he handed over to Ordoñez, the #0 car had moved up to Eighth position out of the 42-car field. Ordoñez took over and completed a triple stint, handing back to Jeannette from Third overall.

The Michelin tire-equipped DeltaWing continued to show incredible endurance when Jeannette returned to the wheel - this time completing a quadruple stint without changing tires.

Ordoñez took over for the final 110 laps, bringing the car across the line in Sixth place. The team gained a further position after the checkered flag when a P2 car was excluded due to a driver exceeding the maximum drive time permitted.

Today's performance was made even more remarkable considering the team had to completely rebuild the car, above, on Wednesday after Jeannette was forced into a dramatic rollover in testing when struck by a GTC-class Porsche!

Featuring half the weight, half the horsepower and half the aerodynamic drag of a typical Le Mans sportscar, the DeltaWing captured the imagination of fans and media alike at its race debut at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sadly, the car was forced out after six hours due to contact with another prototype. This established a target for the Nissan DeltaWing team for Petit Le Mans. Just getting to the race finish was that target, one that was achieved with flying colors!

2013 LAMBORGHINI GALLARDO LP 570-4: SUPER TROFEO!

- Kamis, 18 Oktober 2012 No Comments

Lamborghini celebrates its golden anniversary with an expanded racing series and a new Gallardo racecar.

At a press conference yesterday at the final round of the European series in Los Arcos, above, Stephan Winkelmann, Automobili Lamborghini’s President and CEO and Maurizio Reggiani, Research & Development Director and Head of Lamborghini Motorsport, introduced the 2013 Gallardo and plans for the ultimate one-make racing series: Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo. The 2013 Gallardo is based on the proven chassis and mechanical platform of its predecessor, but showcases extensive aerodynamic re-profiling and the addition of adjustable aerodynamic devices, including an all-new ten-position rear wing.

The net benefit of this significant aerodynamic upgrade is 120 percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency over the 2012 Gallardo. By restyling the brake ducts, the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo achieves a 50-percent improvement in thermal performance with improved front brake cooling. Improved balance and dynamic performance are achieved by increasing downforce by 282 pounds in low-downforce position and 352 pounds in high-downforce trim.

“We have taken a significant step forward with the aerodynamic performance of the new Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Trofeo, but still the car stays true to our core principles. We believe that it is important to evolve the car, while ensuring Super Trofeo remains an attractive series in which to compete,” said Mr. Reggiani.

VW JETTA TURBO HYBRID: DAS SALT SHAKER!

- Rabu, 10 Oktober 2012 No Comments

Turbocharged 1.4-liter Jetta Hybrid averages 186.313 mph over two runs at Bonneville and sets SCTA H/PS production car record. Also sets fastest hybrid speed at 187.147 mph.

After becoming the world’s fastest hybrid at Bonneville in August, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid LSR returned to the Salt Flats on October 5th to break the Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) H/PS land speed record. The class is for production cars with engines of less than 1.5 liters that use forced induction.

Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago averaged 186.313 mph over two runs during the SCTA’s World Finals event, eclipsing the previous record by 18.8 mph. In the course of making his second run, Lago averaged 187.147 mph for the last mile, beating the magical 300-km/h mark. This is also the fastest run recorded by a hybrid, beating the185.394 mph set by the same car back in August.

“We’re very proud that the Jetta Hybrid has not only posted the fastest speed for a hybrid at Bonneville, but that it has gone out and broken an SCTA land speed record as well,” said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, Volkswagen Group of America. “Achieving this record at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid, above, is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class, offering excellent fuel economy while retaining the fun-to-drive nature expected from a Volkswagen.”

Lago drove a Jetta Hybrid specially modified to run in the SCTA’s H/PS class. The all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid marries a 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder TSI gasoline engine with a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission and an electric motor. The combined output of the four-cylinder engine and electric motor is an impressive 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

Because the Jetta Hybrid runs in a production-car class, modifications are strictly controlled by the SCTA. The suspension was lowered, special Salt Flat wheels and tires fitted, and the interior was stripped and outfitted with full safety equipment, including roll cage, racing seat and harness, and a full fire suppression system. Volkswagen R&D in Wolfsburg, Germany modified the powertrain. Output is approximately 300 horsepower.

A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering, Camarillo, California handled project integration and safety modifications. Engineers from the Volkswagen Test Center California in Oxnard, CA supported the implementation and final calibration of the drivetrain in the car.

Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago, who drove the Jetta, said: “It was an honor to drive the car on the Salt - and also pretty exciting. Driving in a straight line may look easy, but it’s a real art to get the power down on the salt and you had better be paying attention to crosswinds, as they can really blow the car off course. Now I have the bug, I really want to become a member of the exclusive 200-mph club at Bonneville. Maybe next year?”

CARBON CONNECTION: INTAKE MANIFOLD MAGIC!

- Minggu, 12 Agustus 2012 No Comments

With runner lengths tuned for peak torque plus the beauty of carbon fiber, Performance Design’s XR manifold delivers max power and head-turning appeal.

Caleb Newman has degrees in engineering, years of hands-on design and development experience at Katech and is now at the helm of Performance Design in Troy, MI. Their latest product is a carbon fiber intake manifold for GM LS7 motors that can increase the output of a stock crate motor by 48 horsepower at 5, 600 rpm. Torque gains of 30 to 50 pound-feet have been documented at between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm.Power increases are considerably higher on race-prepped hot rod and road race LS7s.

Designed and built for cars with larger engine bays, the Carbon XR intake manifold features dual throttles to eliminate airflow restrictions, tall deck fitment without spacers and 12.5-inch- long runners for superior torque curves. The airflow path is similar to an I.T.B. intake with improved drivability due to a reduced number of throttles requiring synchronization and finer throttle area control at tip-in. Carbon fiber is utilized for its light weight, strength and improved heat soak characteristics versus an aluminum casting. It also delivers killer looks!

The XR throttle body flange can be pre-selected for different throttle bodies and throttle bore sizes. Dual 75-mm throttles support up to 900 horsepower (naturally aspirated airflow), while optional dual 90-mm throttles support over 1,300 horsepower. The intake utilizes production sensors, PCV routing and has charcoal canister and vacuum ports available. Custom configurations are possible if necessary for fitment and function to specific applications.

A cross-ram, dual plenum, dual throttle intake manifold allows packaging of long and straight intake runners with raised bellmouths, allowing superior flow and less restriction into the in the runners. Optimum injector targeting aimed at the back of the intake valve is maintained for emissions, fuel atomization, combustion and power. Plenum and runner volumes are sized to support large displacement and high-power engines. Further, plenum shapes are designed and located to be symmetric, providing engine bay aesthetics and even throttle mounting flanges.

Performance Design’s Carbon XR manifold is constructed of carbon fiber and billet 6061-T6 aluminum. A Five-Axis CNC machined head flange offers perfect port matching for LS7 heads. Designed and manufactured in the USA and hand assembled in Troy, MI, the Carbon XR is ideal for performance marine and offshore race boats, hot rods, kit cars and racecars and is priced at $4,999. Coming soon is a version that works with LS3 engines.

MUSTANG COBRA JET: CJ FLASHBACK!

- Senin, 04 Juni 2012 No Comments

In 1968 a Mustang 428 Cobra Jet won the NHRA Winternationals; a 2008 Mustang CJ took home Winternats gold last year. The beat goes on.

Sarasota Café Racer Joe Curley has been a diehard Ford fanatic since his 1960s-1970s drag racing days. And nothing has really changed for this public relations professional who considers Dearborn, MI to be the center of the performance automotive world. Curley’s garage reflects his passion for the Blue Oval: Ford GT, a pair of Panteras (one twin-turbo), a real ’64 Ford 427 Thunderbolt and a 2008 Mustang Cobra Jet, #27 of 50 built. Curley, above, warms up the slicks prior to a run at Bradenton Motorsports Park.

To better understand Ford’s modern-day Cobra Jet program, which has changed little since its first batch of 2008 Mustangs, all you need to do is re-visit Ford’s “Win On Sunday, Sell On Monday" program of the 1960s. Factory built and/or sponsored drag racing cars were used to win fans and increase showroom traffic. In most cases the “enemy” was Chevy, Dodge and Plymouth. Little has really changed today; the enemy is still Chevy and Dodge!

Powered by a 400 horsepower supercharged 5.4 liter (330-CID) DOHC engine, Ford built 50 (FR500CJ) 2008 Cobra Jets, one CJ winning the 2009 Nationals. Brent Hajek, above, drives the first Ford Racing FR500CJ off the production line in Livonia, MI on December 18, 2008.

In 2010 Ford Racing produced 50 more and followed with 50 more 2012 CJ Mustangs. Based on the success of the 2008 model, they got the OK to continue for two additional model years. They mostly look alike, with exception of the hood. Early cars had hood scoops, whereas later models had raised “tunnel” hoods.

Purpose built for sportsman drag racers the FR500CJ or Cobra Jet Mustang has become one of the most controversial drag cars ever built. These cars have been winning and setting records in A/Stock and AA/Stock, above, since Day One. Some highly massaged CJs have been running sub-nine-second times in Super/Stock!

The CJ’s 330-cubic-inch engine, above, is an injected 5.4-liter, four-valve V-8 topped off with a Roots-type positive displacement supercharger. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the 8.4-to-1-compression engine has a cast-iron block and aluminum heads. Weighing in at 3,300 pounds, off-road-only CJ Mustangs cannot be ordered with AC or other luxury options. Standard are cold air intake, a larger throttle body, SFI crank dampener and long tube stainless headers. CJs are fitted with lightweight one-piece drive shafts with safety hoops, nine-inch rear axles with special control arms and an anti-roll bar. Bogart racing wheels are shod with special Goodyear front tires and rear drag slicks.

Joe Curley’s stock CJ interior is fitted with a factory roll cage, seat belts and shoulder harness, a full complement of Ford Racing gauges and tach, short throw shifter and special seats. All CJs are sold only on a bill of sale and cannot be titled (for street use). Little extras include a build-history binder, performance programmer, and the signing of the inside of the deck lid by Ford Racing and Roush employees involved in the build process.

While Joe Curley’s Cobra Jet Mustang looks like a typical Trailer Queen, as do all his cars including his 427 T-Bolt racer, looks can be deceiving. His trailer makes regular trips to race tracks, not shows. And he lives relatively close to Bradenton Motorsports Park, Bradenton, FL where the lead burnout shot was taken during a Cobra Jet competitive event. Joe Curley’s motto: Have Race Car, Will Travel!
