'15 ALFA ROMEO 4C: A GO-KART FOR ADULTS!

- Sabtu, 14 November 2015 No Comments

It’s got the speed and razor-sharp reflexes of a racecar with just enough leather and luxuries to live with. It talks loudly and carries a big heart, blogs Dan Scanlan.

A.L.F.A. began in 1910 as "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili in Milan. When Nicola Romeo took over, the name changed in 1920 to Alfa Romeo. Now it’s part of FCA – Fiat Chrysler Alliance – and the first Alfa to hit our shores since the 1990s is a baby exotic like nothing Alfa has made before.

Revealed in 2011 as a Concept, then as a production coupe in 2013, this baby Supercar hit American shores a year ago in a very limited (500) launch edition, followed with the 4C Spider.Think Italian supercar that shrunk in the wash!

The 4C Spider has brio – liveliness, verve, vivacity or just plain spirit. It also has a pure simplicity accompanied by a visceral rawness. Mounted midway in the carbon fiber chassis is an all-aluminum 1.7-liter dual intercooled, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, below, paired to an Alfa TCT (twin-clutch transmission) and DNA selector with four drive modes. Our 2,337-pound car had the optional racing exhaust, which keeps catalytic converter, removes the muffler and ends in dual exhaust tips. It barks on start-up and snarls, even at low revs. I set off a new Mustang car alarm when I started up next to it! The Alfa sounds best on  twisting roads with up-and downshifts sweetened by the exhaust snarl and crackle and turbo whistle.

DNA stands for the Dynamic, Natural or All-weather modes that the engine and TCT can be set to. The gearshifts are designed to become most aggressive in the Dynamic and Race modes, as quick as 130 milliseconds at full throttle. The clutch acts like a manual, holding you in place until you add gas. It has a two-second hill-holder for easier starts on an incline.

All-weather sets up gentler accelerator input and engine. It still spins fast to its 6,500-rpm redline with lightning-quick up-shifts accompanied by an exhaust “blaat!,” then a neat throttle blip on clean downshifts. Switch to Natural, and more engine comes on line as exhaust snarls more. Dynamic is a more aggressive powertrain calibration with a bit less stability/traction control and even faster shifts in the boost as well as a serious snarl. It also adds a turbo boost and oil pressure display to the red-tinged digital dashboard. It’s quick - 60-mph in 4.9 seconds and 100-mph in 10.9 seconds. Play hard like we did, and 20-mpg is it – only about 200 miles range, so we had to fill up on premium a few times.

For real emotion, hold the alloy DNA switch for five seconds and it’s in Race mode. Stability and anti-slip regulation are de-activated as the driver has to paddle shift. Launch control can be activated – left-foot-brake as you gas it to a bit over 3,500-rpm, then tap the left paddle shift and release as the engine hits 5,600-rpm. That gave us 60-mph in a neck-snapping 4.1 seconds, the rears leaving twin rubber stripes before hooking with a wail/whistle/whoomp from exhaust and turbo at each razor-fast shift. Alfa says this little coupe delivers 1.1-g of lateral acceleration and 1.25-g of maximum braking deceleration. Some notes – the paddle shifters are tiny and a bit bendy at the tips. And in stop-and-go driving, clutch take-up can be a bit jerky.

The 4C rides on a front double wishbone suspension, with a rear MacPherson set-up. For North America, stiffer springs, larger front and rear sway bars and re-tuned shock absorbers. The result is a very firm feel that gets a bit jittery on bad pavement. Rebound is short and very quick, almost harsh at the limit. This really isn’t a relaxed commuter. It’s very precise steering rack requires attention on bumpy pavement. The 4C Spider follows every groove on a highway as well as asphalt patch edges. But there’s great feedback on a smooth road. The entire structure was stiff and creak-free.

With a 41/59 weight balance, engine in the middle, low center of gravity and Pirelli P-Zeros with 3,000 miles on them all-round, our 4C Spider grabbed each corner, played with it and eagerly headed to the next. The car corners flat, front tires talking when we pushed hard in the skid pad, but never going wide. Add gas as you exit a turn and it just pulls its way out, the tail kicking out just a tad, then a quick flick of the wheel and a minute gas adjustment naturally tucks it into line. The car loved to be thrown around and asked for more.

The TCT would sometimes upshift into a turn, or downshift out when I’d rather it stay put, so I’d tap it into manual to hold the gear. Manual steering fits in with the lightweight, simple nature, quick at a 15.7:1 ratio. But it’s a workout parallel parking. This is a car that asks for both hands on the wheel at speed. The four self-ventilating perforated discs with Brembo four-piston aluminum calipers in front stopped us time and time again short and straight with no fade and immediate brake engagement.

Alfa Romeos old and new have been identified by one design – the “Trilobo” grill. The 4C Spider has the most modern interpretation – a black mesh-filled triangle with hood lines that flow off the triangle’s edges and wide-mouthed intakes to cool the radiator. Those rising flared rear fenders join the flowing buttresses off the targa bar to give this mid-engine exotic a serious dose of Italian supercar.

Low-profile Pirelli P-Zero rubber lives on all four corners - P205/40ZR18-inch in front and P235/35ZR19-inch in back, living on 10-spoke dark graphite gray alloy wheels. Cross-drilled vented disc brakes with red “Alfa Romeo” calipers are easy to see. There’s a carbon fiber air intake on the driver’s-side sill to cool the gearbox. The sweptback windshield frame is carbon fiber for added stiffness in the topless Spider vs. the coupe’s alloy frame.

A taut black cloth targa-style center section is water-tight. It rolls up and fits in the 3.7-cubic-foot trunk, filling half of it. Alfa says the Spider is about 20 pounds heavier than the Coupe, just as stiff and with the same body shape bar some changes. While the whole shape consciously echoes one of Alfa’s most beautiful cars – the ‘67 Tipo 33 Stradale – the round taillights with twin LED rings and that lip spoiler are the most direct styling cue to that rare (only 18 made) racecar. The belly of this bambino is clad for smooth underbody airflow.

The 4C gets a racecar-like hand-laid carbon fiber monocoque chassis that weighs 236 pounds with aluminum suspension and engine supports fore and aft. You step over wide glossy carbon fiber door sills, duck and drop down into composite-framed, thinly-padded high-back red leather buckets that are supportive and comfortable enough. More carbon fiber flows up the center console, rear bulkhead and door sills.

Alfa’s 4C Spider gets lots of leather with double red stitching on the dash and doors, even a classic leather door pull. More stitching frames the Alpine stereo with just enough power out of four speakers to be heard over wind noise and engine snarl. There is a USB and MP3 audio input cable tucked into the pocket that passes for a glove box under the passenger dash. There are no armrests, but two slitted leather boxes outboard of the seats hold a smartphone.

It’s a tight cockpit, my driver’s seat pushed all the way back so I had leg room. There’s less leg room for the passenger and no seat height adjustment for either. The flat-bottom, fat-rimmed, leather-clad steering wheel tilts and telescopes, but never got high enough to see the top of the seven-inch color digital driver information display in a carbon fiber pod. It has a digital speedometer and a 7,000-rpm (6,500-rpm redline) tach ringing it.

The slim center console hosts the gear selector – neutral, first, reverse or manual/automatic shifting – as well as the DNA drive mode select switch. Top on and windows up, we heard some wind noise from the mirrors and roof. Top off and windows down, wind buffeting was livable and the engine was always heard with wind noise. Rear vision is a slit. The tiny trunk gets a bit warm aft of the engine, and is tiny – there’s a tire repair kit because there’s no room for a spare.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe starts at $53,900, while the Launch Edition starts at $68,400. Our white 4C Spider started at $63,900 with a $1,300 convenience group; $2,500 dark gray 18-inch front/19-inch rear alloy wheels, $1,000 Xenon headlights, $500 racing exhaust, $300 carbon fiber instrument bezel and $300 red brake calipers, for a total $71,895. Alfa's 4C Spider is a go-kart for adults with the speed and razor-sharp reflexes of a racer, plus leather and luxury. It's one helluva ride!

PUT-IN-BAY (PIBRRR): ROAD RACES REUNION!

- Selasa, 08 September 2015 No Comments

Mike Matune covers the 1950s-era road racing reunion, celebrating classic ‘airport & street racing' at its finest.

The starter waves the green flag as the field accelerates down the front straight during the 2015 Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion on South Bass Island in Western Lake Erie. In period, the racers at Put in Bay occupied an important spot on the racing calendar for small-bore production and race cars. Its recreation as a vintage event has involved perseverance and dedication by the community, spectators, organizers and participants, who are all to be congratulated for their accomplishments.

The anticipation begins even before you step onto the island, as you take the Miller Ferry over shared with race and street cars of all ilk, trucks, trailers and transporters. The ferry trip gives one a chance to begin decompressing as you enjoy the company and the views, both the scenery and the automotive eye candy aboard.

Part of the festivities includes an Original Course Tour. Here Joe Bojalad and his son share their AC as they negotiate Cemetery Corner. The Bojalad’s AC was featured in an episode of “Chasing Classic Cars” after Joe, Jr. found the car and had it restored for his Dad to once again drive at Put-in-Bay; reprising Joe Sr.’s 1955 win in the same car.

To accommodate racing today, the race has been moved to the Put-in-Bay Airport, tying together two sports car traditions, the through-the streets and airport venues, both of which figured prominently in post-WWII sports car racing. Here Kurt Niemeyer’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder negotiates the chicane between the runway and the South taxi way. Niemeyer’s Alfa is another example of the traditions of PIBRRR, having been run by his Dad in the original event and making its reappearance on the Island after recently being reacquired by Niemeyer.

Airport circuits all have a few of the same things in common; wide open flat concrete surfaces, courses marked by hay bales, hangers, airplanes and speeding race cars. This shot of Rick Frazee and his Sprite illustrates all the elements of the airport circuit genre.

At the end of the front straight, a 180 degree sweeper moves you back onto the runway. Klaus Selbert sets up for that turn in his Porsche 911 under the watchful eyes of corner worker Jeff Knapp of Lake Erie Communications. The sign reminds one that this is an active airport. Accordingly, racing was delayed each morning until the mail plane departed and ended in the late afternoon as the airport reopened, the course being set up and dismantled accordingly.

What do you do when you and your ultra-rare Porsche Carrera Speedster have an altercation with a hay bale? Why you take it back to the Paddock and make repairs so you can drive it home, just like “Doc” Weiss does here. Weiss has been racing this car since 1962. Such is the nature of PIBRRR where camaraderie, a laid-back atmosphere and reliving the sports car traditions of the past are the event’s guiding principles and where your ego very much takes a back seat.

Joe Bojalad’s Elva Mk VI Prototype is steeped in racing lore. Marking the transition from front to mid-engine sports racers, this Mk VI enjoyed success in England and on the Continent before being imported to the U.S.  Here Bunny Ribbs, perhaps better known as the Father of noted racer Willy T. Ribbs, raced it to a West Coast Championship. He was an accomplished racer.

While PIBRRR certainly exudes a laid-back aura, the participants took the racing seriously, perhaps not fixated on results, but certainly interested in the challenge of the course. Here Paul Adams in an Elva Mk II looks for the apex while Michael Barstow in an MG TD looks for a way around Adams. Of interest, is that both of these cars traveled from California to Ohio.

In period, the original organizers of Put-in-Bay concentrated on lower-displacement cars. The current races mirror that car selection, limiting most racers to small-displacement cars built before 1964 with some exceptions. To add interest and expand participation, classes for Guest Street cars and Racing Exhibition Entrants have been added. An example of the later is the Porsche 914-4 of Scott Sadowsky.  Here he illustrates one of the quandaries of the circuit; just how close can I get to that hay bale and not hit it? Hitting a hay bale will get you at least a stern lecture from the stewards, if not an invitation to take the next ferry off the island.

Tom Cole gives us an example of the Guest Street class in his Porsche 912. Cole‘s car is a Concours award winner, but that didn’t keep him from trying his hand at the Original Course Tour as well as making the over 450 mile round trip from his home in Southwestern Ohio. Put-in-Bay is developing a draw and a lucky few have discovered it.

Before racers head home on Wednesday, they participate in a car show well attended by race goers and participants alike. Cars are divided into street and competition categories. Awards recognize not only appearance and provenance, but also the spirit in which competitors take part in the event.

THE QUAIL: CROWN JEWEL OF MONTEREY MADNESS!

- Sabtu, 15 Agustus 2015 No Comments

Some of the world’s finest examples of automotive design and engineering were staged at this year's Motorsports Gathering at the Quail Lodge and Golf Club.

“Among the many facets of the Monterey Classic Car Week, The Quail is the most exclusive taking as it does, the form of a very grand private garden party,” comments Rolex Watch USA President and CEO, Stewart Wicht. “As well as fine food, guests have the chance to view at leisure some of the finest examples of classic race and road cars whose values again, echo those of the Rolex brand.”

Some of the finest examples of the world’s most sought-after cars add spectacular context to this unique garden party. From Aston Martin to Alfa Romeo, Bugatti to BMW, Chrysler to Cooper, and then Ferrari: no less than 56 examples of the legendary Italian supercar maker were on display. Also not to be missed, Jaguar to Jensen, Lamborghini to Lancia, Maserati to Morgan, and so on, not forgetting of course, the mighty Porsche.

In the Rolex hospitality area at The Quail, former World Championship Formula 1 Grand Prix driver Jochen Maas shared his thoughts on the event: “It has developed over the past ten years to be the most important event of the week. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is great, but for sheer volume, The Quail is a special and unique setting”. Mass drove in 114 GPs, scoring a number of podiums and a victory before moving to saloons where his greatest victory was in the grueling 24 Hours of Spa in 1972, then onto sports cars.
In this category, Mass scored a victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1989. Rolex is closely associated with the legendary French endurance race as Official Timekeeper since 2001. “The Quail has great exclusivity and the price of entry reflects this, it has a unique style and the organizers are sticklers for quality.”

Among the many unusual exhibits at The Quail this year was a unique, aerodynamic recent construction called by its maker, Terry Cook, an Auburn-Bugatti Delahaye Boattail Speedster. This artistic head-turning creation, was completed only six months ago.

Also attracting keen attention at The Quail was an original Ford GT40 racecar that competed in 1966 at both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and won the Rolex 24 At Daytona. A 1956 Maserati 200SI Spyder – one of only two left out of an original batch of four, was raced by Sir Stirling Moss in the same year.

A spectacular Jaguar XJR-5 endurance racecar powered by the famous British company’s 6.2-litre V12 engine, successfully raced in the mid-1980s, was also on display.

Also a big draw of The Quail each year is the presentation of the Rolex Circle of Champions “Best of Show” Award. This is judged by a panel of entrants from around the world in an all-day process that takes into account all aspects of each car displayed: style, presentation, engineering and artistic impact. This year’s winner is a beautiful ‘68 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale, and Lance Butler of Mouse Motors of Chicago accepted the Award.

“It’s incredible! It’s a great car that drives well and has incredible dynamics, epitomizing the finest engineering capabilities of the era,” said Lance Butler after receiving a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona from Rolex Watch USA President and CEO, Stewart Wicht.

2016 AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS: PEGASO CELEBRATION!

- Jumat, 17 Juli 2015 No Comments

The 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance will feature and celebrate the rare and exotic Spanish Pegaso.

Pegaso is Spanish for Pegasus, the winged divine stallion usually depicted as pure white on the Pegaso insignia. Pegasus' mythological role was to deliver thunderbolts to Zeus. Appropriate, because that was the thunderous effect the stunning Pegaso Thrill coupe had on the 1953 Turin Auto Show when the Spanish Touring-bodied grand touring coupe made its public debut.

"That such an elegant advanced design could come from a marketing plan promoting plebian commercial vehicles is a testament to the genius, vision and skill of engineer Wifredo Ricart," said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.

Ricart was the suave, articulate (he spoke five languages) and urbane creator of the Pegaso automobile. From his arrival at Alfa Romeo in 1936, Ricart was Enzo Ferrari's nemesis, finally displacing him and creating a fleet of advanced and remarkably complex Grand Prix and competition sports and touring cars. World War II halted Ricart's leading edge designs for Alfa Romeo and saw him return to his native Spain.

The Pegaso Z-102 was practically a grand touring coupe on a Grand Prix racecar chassis; exquisitely detailed with a supercharged, four-cam V-8 of 2.5 liters, a five-speed constant mesh transaxle suspended by torsion bars and one of the most elegant de Dion rear suspensions conceived. Built in immaculately clean workshops by apprentices who were not troubled with the realities of modern mass production or the pressure of a time clock, Pegaso roadsters and coupes were the most exotic road toys for the hyper-rich in the mid-1950s.

A mere 84 Pegaso cars were created as nothing more than an advanced apprentice training program for the giant truck, bus and armored car manufacturing enterprise that took root, appropriately, in the former Hispano-Suiza factory in Barcelona, Spain.

"Pegasos are technically extravagant cars," said Warner. "It's period Formula 1 technology for the road, wrapped in coachwork by the likes of Touring and Saoutchik. The Pegaso Z-102 did exactly what Ricart and the Spanish government wanted: it brought Spanish industry to the attention of the world, and did it in a very glamorous way."

Nearly ten percent of Pegaso's total car production will be on the field of the 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, March 13, 2016.

CELEBRATE: MONTEREY CLASSIC CAR WEEK!

- Rabu, 08 Juli 2015 No Comments

Historic racecars rev it up from track to city streets to kick off the

annual Monterey Madness.

The heart of historic downtown Monterey, CA will be transformed into an outdoor motorsports museum when historic racecars line Alvarado Street between 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday, August 7. That’s when Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca kicks off the annual Monterey Classic Car Week.

The racecar show lines the street, allowing visitors to freely walk among the racecars, take pictures beside them and ask questions of their owners. This event marks the start of an exhilarating week on the central coast and allows visitors to gain an up-close look at the weekend’s biggest automotive stars. In addition to its motorsports attractions, the racecar show will also feature raffle prizes, music and driver interviews.

With the support of the Old Monterey Business Association, the show features a select group of classic racecars that are competing in both the Monterey Pre-Reunion and the week’s cornerstone event, Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Under CHP escort, this band of historic race cars will depart the race track, drive down Highway 68 and finish their journey in beautiful Old Monterey where they will be on display for the downtown community.

Among the 30 diverse race cars planning to participate are a ‘56 Lotus Eleven, ‘56 Alfa Romeo, ‘66 Shelby GT350H, ‘32 Alfa Romeo Monza and a ’87 Trans-Am Corvette.

Cibo Ristorante Italiano, http://www.cibo.com/ located at 301 Alvarado is a generous supporter of the event. They will be hosting a driver reception that will be open to the public at 5 p.m. with complimentary appetizers until 7 p.m. and live jazz music beginning at 5:30.

Part competition and part pageantry, racing history comes to life as cars from nearly every era grace Mazda Raceway August 13-16 at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The cars, which are selected for their historical significance, authenticity and period-correctness, are divided into 15 classes, based on type of car, displacement and era of origin.

VIR: 13th ANNUAL WILD HARE RUN!

- Rabu, 15 April 2015 No Comments

Mike Matune, our man in the field, blogs about another great vintage racing event

in Southern Virginia.

VRG and VDCA combined for an early season event at Virginia International Raceway. Despite early threats of intense weather, the event ran under clear skies. The organizers somehow managed to hold the rain off until evening and the racing was over, neat trick! Here the Group 3 field, top, moves out of “Oak Tree” and stretches all the way down the back straight. Noted author Tom Cotter (Holman Moody, The Cobra in the Barn and 50 Shades Of Rust) and friend of CGC editor, turned up at VIR with a Corvette. Normally associated with the Blue Oval and Shelby Cobras, Tom’s Sting Ray sports SAAC stickers front and rear. His Corvette has been a racecar for almost its entire life. Tom, above, signals his intentions to pit on Turn 17.

The 13th annual Wild Hare Run has the distinction of being an MG vintage racers’ “Focus Event” which translated in a large turnout. Bob Virikas’s MGA set the tone. While the safety gear, like his helmet & driving suit and the car’s roll bar, are modern, the car harkens back to another time with taped headlights, full windshield, painted wire wheels and octagon shaped number roundels trimmed in a checkered motif.

Staying with the MG theme, we move to the other end of the speed and noise spectrum with Jerry Richards’ MG B GT V8. Looking menacing with its Sebring bodywork stuffed with large wheels & tires, the car is powered by a Rover (ex GM) aluminum V-8 equipped with a brace of Webers. His was one of two V-8-powered MGs there and they proved worthy competitors in the “big car” racing sessions.

Cartoonist Henry Payne IV proves he is as quick in a race car as he is with a quip. The Payne family has been racing for generations and Henry continues that legacy. His mount is a Lola T596 Sports 2000. While powered by relatively stock 2000-cc Ford Pinto SOHC Fours, the cars enjoy more significantly sophisticated chassis, suspension and aerodynamics. As they are relatively closely matched on power, Sports 2000s put on a great show.

We have shown Dennis Moser’s GTO before, but its unique appearance and scintillating performance bears repeating.  One can’t avoid making the connection to Herb Adams’ “Grey Ghost” of Trans-Am fame. I recently became aware of a book that tells the story of a couple of Adams’ Trans-Am racers in novel form, Blood, Sweat & Gears by David G. Barnes It’s an entertaining read.

With Alfa’s return to the U.S. market, it is time to remember some of their past glory such as Tomas LaCosta’s ‘65 Giulia TI. Under its boxy, sedan exterior, the car holds many of the same powertrain parts as the sexier roadster and coupe siblings. It gives the lucky driver a true sports sedan, “Q-Ship” experience.

Racecars are complex beasts exhibiting strange behaviors and defying logical solutions. Glen Trimper races an Opel GT, hardly a common choice in any kind of racing. The car is still new and only time will tell if it will become his “Unfair Advantage” or just turn out unfair!

You never know what you are going to find on a pit walk. Here’s Mark Brummond’s ‘56 Marketeer. The name is probably a play on the popular at the time, Disney “Mouseketeer” name. This is an all-electric car conceived as a fully functioning automobile with complete road equipment and designed to be titled and registered for street use. Its lack of practicality inevitably hastened its demise, but today it makes a great pit conveyance.

Todd Brown, at the bottom of the “Roller Coaster”, took another of the Sprint races.
