Check Out the New BMW M2!

Lately a lot of people have been down on BMW, from weird designs to bloated and heavy cars and even the deletion of manual transmissions from certain models. Quite a few accusations have been flying around that The Ultimate Driving Machine is becoming a misnomer.

Instead of taking all of this lying down, BMW has been hitting back, and I couldn't be happier. Just yesterday, it revealed the all-new M2, which looks impressive, to say the least.

If you read nothing else about this car and just drool over the pictures, know this: It produces more torque than any M3 in history, it comes with a manual transmission and rev-matching, there's a fully-variable Active M Differential and it has an aluminum suspension.

Nestled under the hood is a potent 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine (yay!). The thing pumps out 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, with a redline of 7,000 rpm. The big takeaway is it packs more of a punch than the 1 M Coupe, which was a great performance car. When it comes to torque, there's 343 lb.-ft. available, which is plenty of twisting force to snap you back in the seats, plus that peak amount is available from a low 1,400 rpm all the way to 5,560 rpm. As has been the practice lately with BMW and other automakers, there's an overboost function that will temporarily increase torque output to 369 lb.-ft. of torque, but it's only available 1,450 to 4,750 rpm.

For those who are really into engine design, they should know this is an all-new design. It's made entirely of aluminum, which lends itself to better performance and efficiency. Engineers worked to optimize its thermodynamics. The closed-deck design is highly rigid, which allows for higher cylinder pressure and obviously better horsepower/torque figures. The configuration also means the water jacket for the cylinders is closed up top.

Some components were sourced from the M3 and M4, such as the crankshaft main bearing shells, the pistons, etc. You can find the turbo integrated into the exhaust manifold, all in the name of efficiency. Other efficient designs include the electric power steering drawing zero electricity when the car's traveling straight, brake energy regeneration, the oil pump being map-controlled and the coolant pump only running as needed.

BMW says that with the optional M Double Clutch Transmission (DCT) and launch control turned on, the 2016 M2 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. If you want to row the gears yourself with the manual transmission, that time increases to 4.4 seconds, which is still great. You can go up to 155 in the car, thanks to electronic limits.

The M2 is definitely made for track days. Engineers used a second oil sump cover, plus a special suction system to ensure no oil starvation happens during hard braking or the car whipping around turns. An electrically controlled flap in the exhaust system helps maintain optimal back-pressure.

Another great piece of news is that the electronic helps don't take away all of the fun, when you want it. More specifically, the dynamic stability control works with M Dynamic Mode. Drivers can select Sport+ mode for track driving, which means electronic interventions come later and allow for more wheel slip, so you can drift it around corners on a track. At the same time, there are still the electronic helpers to prevent the car from careening out of control. You won't get monster drifts out of the M2, but you can do moderate drifts. This might not satisfy everyone, but it's better than the tech taking away all of the fun.

One of the best parts of the 2016 BMW M2 is that it looks great. This is a positive sign for BMW, and hopefully it's a taste of things to come.

Mercedes As Art

Mercedes teamed up with artist Sarah Illenberger to create some one-of-a-kind art. When I first heard about this, I thought it would be another art car project, which I see all the time, and are usually pretty mundane. Instead I was blow away, because the results are something you have to see to believe.

I personally think that the F015 Luxury in Motion concept car is ugly, mostly because it strongly resembles a car-sized suppository. The fact that Illenberger can take such a challenging shape and turn it into some compelling art is impressive, to say the least.

The whole point of these art installations is supposed to be to draw attention to Mercedes' autonomous drive technology. People are technophobes are skittish towards big leaps in innovation - like housemakers back in the day who were concerned about the potential health side effects of cooking using a microwave. Using art, Mercedes is able to soften up the image of autonomous drive tech, showing a human connection to it. Too often engineers forget the human end of things, which works to alienate the end user, and that's a big turnoff. Considering how scary a car that drives itself can be fore people, it's best to eliminate as many negatives from the equation as possible.

Now if only Mercedes would create a fully-autonomous vehicle that didn't share an overall shape with a less-than-pleasant medical device. That right there would get a lot more people on board.

Interestingly enough, Illenberger did one art installation for something other than the F015, and I think it might be the best one. The whole analogy with burning rubber is beautiful and emotive at the same time, embodying to me some of the best things about cars of any era.

Proof that Germans are Weird

As an automotive journalist I get all kinds of press releases and other things sent to me. Since I deal with companies spread around the world, that means the stuff is constantly pouring in at all hours, every day of the year. I have to ignore a fair amount of it, because it is an information dump. Every once in a while there's something just completely weird tucked in with new vehicle announcements, technological breakthroughs, and smiling PR photos. I received just such a thing recently from Daimler.

I love Germans. They have their quirks, and I can always tell when a press release was written by a German, but they are also fun-loving in their own way. Sure, they don't have the clever snark the Brits do, but they really know how to cut loose and have a good time, which can include some amazing kraut, bratwurst, and steins. But sometimes, they cut loose in ways that just leave me speechless. Case in point, this:

And this:

And let's not forget about this:

This was from a photo shoot for Smart. What you see is Father Christmas shopping at the Galeries Lafayette in Berlin using a Smart Brabus Electric Drive. I guess the sleigh was just too big and is contributing to increased carbon emissions, because reindeer fart and all. As you can clearly see, this is a modern example of Father Christmas and he's joined by a young lady dressed like an angel, of the Victoria's Secret variety. As my wife said "that's a cute dress, but the whole thing is weird."

I'm more impressed that they managed to cram that many packages in the car, because I know what the "cargo" area is like.

Obviously this was not geared at a United States market. Here, Daimler (the parent company of Smart and Mercedes-Benz) gives us a traditional Santa Claus signing off on cars being naughty and nice. Because that's normal:

Can Mercedes Take on the Porsche 911 and Win?

It's no secret in the automotive industry that a lively competition is always thriving among the German luxury brands. One of those rivalries is heating up in an interesting way as Mercedes sets its sights on the mighty Porsche 911.

Many other automakers in the past have sought to knock the 911 from its perch as one of the most popular and celebrated sports cars in the world. While the car is far from perfect, the 911 has a following that you could easily describe as cult-like in its devotion. For full disclosure, I fell in love with the 911 as a child and probably have never fully recovered, although I have reached the point where I can see the flaws in the car that also make it so incredible.

The car that Mercedes is unleashing onto the market is the AMG GT. It looks like it should have gullwing doors, but it does not, which is a strange slight to the legendary SLS. What the car does have is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Peak output measures 456 horsepower. There is a higher-performance AMG GT S in the works as well, which boasts 503 horsepower and helps the car rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. In addition, the top speed comes in at 193 mph.

How long do you have to wait to see the car at dealerships? The Merecedes AMG GT S launches in spring of 2015, so you only have to make it through the winter. The AMG GT will hit showroom floors in 2016.

The real question is, what will Porsche do to ensure the 911 weathers the coming storm?

Blogging From A to Z Day 14: N is for Nurburgring

For the month of April I will be participating in the Blogging From A to Z Challenge. Learn more about the challenge by clicking here. Each day (except Sundays) I will be posting a theme based on each letter of the alphabet. This blog is covering automotive topics for the month. To read my other blog posts for the challenge, click here.

Few racetracks rise to the level of celebrity the Nurburgring has enjoyed. Despite all of the talk about the track, and its use as a benchmark tool for automakers trying to show off the performance capabilities of new models, most people understand little about the track.

The north loop or Nordschleife is the area that you always see on car commercials. It measures over 14 miles long. A GP-Strecke portion of the track was added in 1983 and is used for numerous motorsport competitions. It measures just over 3 miles long. In some rare cases, the entire track is used for competitions.

The Nurburgring has been referred to as the Green Hell. The track is extremely challenging and even treacherous as it takes drives through many hairpin turns and straightaways with gradual turns and sudden dips, to name a few of the difficult areas. According to Jeremy Clarkson of the BBC's Top Gear, the track has claimed over 200 lives and counting. Crashes are pretty common as drivers who aren't experienced push their cars too hard at the wrong spots and find themselves unable to negotiate different sections.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Nurburgring is that on some days, mostly the weekends, drivers can take their car to the track to race. It is technically considered a toll road that's open to the public, but there is no speed limit or oncoming traffic. Take that, Autobahn! This feature was in jeopardy when the track went into bankruptcy and some Americans were moving to purchase it, possibly to even demolish the track, but thankfully a group of German investors outbid them with the aim of keeping the track the automotive icon it should always be.

There are many, many videos of the 'Ring, but here are a couple to give you a taste for the track, if you haven't seen it before.
