The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban

- Kamis, 08 Oktober 2015 No Comments
2012 Chevrolet Suburban. Images courtesy of Chevrolet.
The 2012 Chevy Suburban offers a cavernous interior that can seat up to nine people, if outfitted with the optional bench seat in the front row. All three rows of seating come with plenty of shoulder, hip and legroom that can accommodate even tall adults. LTZ models come with bucket seats for the first two rows, meaning the Suburban can only seat seven occupants. The rear cargo area is humongous with 137 total cubic feet that can hold even larger pieces of furniture, outclassing other full-size SUVs.

Chevrolet loads the Suburban with standard feature such as steering wheel mounted controls, power door locks and windows, Bluetooth for hands-free phone connectivity, headphone jacks in the rear two rows and an eight-speaker sound system. LT models come with additional standard features like fog lights, rear parking sensors, leather seats, heated front seats and power-adjusting brake and gas pedals. LTZ models come with a power lift gate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a Bose branded ten-speaker sound system and heated second row seats.

Buyers can choose between two different engines for the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban. The smaller of the two engines, a 5.3 liter V8 that produces 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque, comes in the 1500 trim level. The 2500 trim level comes with a 6.0 liter V8 that puts out 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available is a six-speed automatic. Power can go to either the Suburban’s rear wheels, or all four if equipped with the optional four-wheel-drive. 2500 models can tow up to 9,600 pounds when outfitted with proper equipment. The EPA estimates gas mileage for 1500 models to be 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, while 2500 models achieve 10 mpg in city driving and 15 mpg on the highway.

As far as safety, the 2012 Suburban comes with General Motor’s OnStar service, which allows drivers to call for roadside assistance and also automatically calls for help after a collision. Frontal and side airbags protect the driver and front passenger, while curtain airbags extend down the sides of the vehicle to protect all three rows. Helping drivers avoid accidents are standard features such as a system that warns the driver when another vehicle is in the Suburban’s blind spots, traction control, antilock brakes on all four wheels and stability control.

If you're in the market for an SUV, likely the Suburban is too much truck. It's not the smoothest ride out there and can be difficult to maneuver in parking areas, especially without cameras or parking sensors. At the same time, if you need plenty of space on all three rows, plus a lot of cargo space and the ability to tow heavy trailers/boats/whatever, then the Suburban is a perfect fit.

The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe is a traditional full-size SUV, complete with a box-frame construction like Chevy’s Silverado pickup truck. Because of its design, the Tahoe is just as comfortable ambling down freeways or city streets as it is trudging through muddy or snow off-road trails. Occupants enjoy a taller ride-height than in crossover vehicles or minivans. Still, the Tahoe offers a very smooth ride and plenty of comforts that will make occupants forget they are riding in a truck.

Seating inside the 2012 Tahoe can accommodate up to nine passengers if outfitted with the split bench front seat. The front seats can be both heated and cooled, while the second seats can be heated and also power-fold into the vehicle’s floor to increase cargo capacity. Cargo capacity can reach 109 cubic feet with the second and third rows of seats folded down.

Buyers have only one engine choice with the Tahoe, a 5.3 liter V8 that puts out 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. The engine works with a six-speed automatic transmission to provide power to either just the rear wheels, or to all four for models with the optional four-wheel-drive. Chevy makes four-wheel-drive models with either a two-speed transfer case or a single-speed transfer case that eliminates the low-gear option.

Chevrolet loaded the 2012 Tahoe SUV with a number of technological systems to aid with operating the vehicle. Owners can download an application to their smart phone, which allows them to connect with the Tahoe to check up on the status of the vehicle, schedule maintenance with a local dealer and even contact roadside assistance. An optional rear-view camera helps drivers see obstacles of all sizes when traveling in reverse. Everyone in the Tahoe can enjoy music using the vehicle’s USB, allowing occupants to play music on MP3 players and flash drivers. Also, a Bluetooth connection allows drivers to place phone calls using steering wheel mounted controls, allowing them to stay focused on the task of driving.

If you're in the market for a used SUV, the 2012 Tahoe isn't a bad option. Just keep in mind that if you need to use the third row on a regular basis, cargo space is pretty tight. Also, it won't handle as smoothly as the Traverse or other unibody crossover options. The tradeoff is excellent towing ability, four-wheel drive and the ability to tackle some fairly rough terrain in the great outdoors.

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser

Shopping for used cars can be a frustrating process, which is why I'm beginning to offer some information on different models. If you're in the market for an incredibly capable and luxurious SUV, you can't really go wrong with the Toyota Land Cruiser (assuming it fits into your budget).

Toyota’s Land Cruiser is an four-wheeling legend, as it is one SUV that has always performed phenomenally well on rugged off-road courses. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser continues this tradition, adding in an extensive list of rugged off-road technologies as well as features to make the ride more comfortable no matter where your adventure takes you.

One huge advantage of the 2013 Land Cruiser is that previously optional equipment has now all become standard. The equipment list is extensive and covers a variety of both needs and wants. On the outside, the Land Cruiser comes with 18 inch wheels, auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors, fog lamps, xenon headlights, automatic windshield wipers, privacy glass for the rear seats, roof rack and a sunroof. Convenience features include keyless entry and ignition, a DVD entertainment system, four-zone automatic climate control,  a cooling box in the center console, heated front and second row seats, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and a power tilt-and-telescope steering wheel.

Anyone looking to take the 2013 Land Cruiser off the road will not be disappointed. A locking center differential and a ground clearance of 8.9 inches help it tackle a variety of off-road conditions.  A Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System also comes standard, which automatically adjusts the stabilizer bars so the vehicle drives with better stability both on the road and off.  The Land Cruiser also comes with a five-speed crawl control that acts kind of like a cruise control for off-roading (but at low speeds). Multi-Terrain Select allows the driver to change the vehicle’s stability and traction control settings based on the surface the vehicle is traveling on. An Off-Road Turn Assist system automatically puts the brakes on the wheels on the inside corner to help the vehicle turn more sharply, which helps drivers avoid large obstacles such as boulders. Toyota also outfits the Land Cruiser will hill-start assist, which keeps the vehicle from rolling backwards after being stopped on a hill.

Electronic goodies are also extensive in the 2013 Land Cruiser. Drivers benefit from standard Bluetooth connection, adaptive cruise control, a backup camera, navigation with real-time traffic, voice controls and Toyota Etune smartphone apps that allow you to interact with the vehicle both when you are with the vehicle and are away from it. Standard is also the Lexus Safety Connect system, which not only helps you contact help in an emergency but also automatically calls 911 if the system detects the vehicle has been in a collision.

Power comes from a 5.7 liter V8 engine that produces up to 381 horsepower and 401 pound-foot of torque, giving the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser the ability to tackle off-road obstacles with pleasure as well as tow up to 8,500 pounds on the road. Paired with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission, the Land Cruiser attains an EPA estimated 13 MPG for city driving and 18 MPG for highway driving. A large 24.6 gallon fuel tank gives a driving range of about 442 miles of highway travel.

Basically, the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is like a luxury cruiser crossed with a Jeep. It's incredibly surefooted on trails, yet is easily contends with any luxury SUV out there. While it won't appeal to everyone, if those are two things you want mixed together, it's also comes with the bonus of bullet-proof reliability, making it a great vehicle to own.

The 2012 Ford Escape

- Senin, 07 September 2015 No Comments
The 2012 Ford Escape represents the American automaker’s compact crossover, providing a small and maneuverable vehicle that also packs the utility of much larger SUVs. With the proper equipment, the Escape can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The Escape comes with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive to handle inclement weather or curvy roads.

Ford offers a multitude of technological advancements with the 2012 Escape. It is the only vehicle in its class to come with an Auto Park feature that not only finds viable parallel parking spots, but also steers the vehicle into those spots. Unlike any of its competitors, the Ford offers a hybrid version of the Escape. Ford’s Sync system, which allows the driver to control the stereo through voice commands, is also an option in the Escape.

Powering the Ford Escape are three different engine options. A 2.5 liter four cylinder engine is standard, providing 171 horsepower, while an optional 3.0 liter V6 produces 240 horsepower. Ford offers both a five speed manual and a six speed automatic transmission. Hybrid models come with a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine block that is mated to an electric motor to produce a total of 177 horsepower. The hybrid only comes with a continuously variable transmission so transitions between the electric and gas motors are not noticeable while driving. Escape hybrids that are outfitted with all-wheel-drive make use of a second electric motor that delivers power to the rear wheels as needed.

Parents will enjoy the 2012 Ford Escape’s MyKey system, which allows the vehicle’s owner to program specific keys so the vehicle operates under certain restrictions. Parents can restrict teenagers’ keys so the Escape will not travel faster than 80 mph, as well as restrict the stereo’s volume to only 45 percent of the original volume limit. Another option mutes the stereo until the driver’s seat belt is fastened. Parents can also program the key so the Escape makes audible alarms when it reaches 45, 55 or 65 mph so teenagers are aware of their speed.

The 2012 Toyota 4Runner

- Rabu, 12 Agustus 2015 No Comments
When it comes to the 2012 4Runner, Toyota offers an SUV with serious off-road capabilities. The vehicle’s body-on-frame construction is something of a rarity in today’s world where more and more SUVs are becoming increasingly car-like. Toyota further bolsters the 4Runner’s ability to tackle heavy snow, mud and small bodies of water by outfitting it with a traction control system designed for off-road conditions, skid plates, a full-size spare tire, hill-descent and hill-hold assistance systems, off-road tires and locking differentials. Trail and Limited models come with a suspension system that can disconnect the front and rear stabilizer bars to handle especially tricky off-road conditions.

While the exterior of the 2012 Toyota 4Runner has a rough exterior, the interior provides a comfortable and technologically-advanced environment for the driver and passengers. Standard seating accommodates up to five occupants, while an optional third row of seating increases capacity to seven occupants. The driver enjoys Toyota’s Entune system, which displays real-time traffic alerts, nearby fuel prices and weather updates. Drivers also can use the standard cruise control, hands-free Bluetooth cell phone connectivity and the 4Runner’s eight-speaker sound system with an auxiliary jack made to connect to MP3 players. Second-row passengers get their own air vents, meaning heated and cooled air does not take as long to travel to the rear portions of the interior.

Powering the 2012 Toyota 4Runner is a 4.0 liter V6 engine that produces a peak 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Toyota teams the engine with a five-speed automatic transmission, helping the 4Runner achieve an estimated 17 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg for highway driving. SR5 models come with a part-time four-wheel-drive system while Limited models come with a full-time system and locking center differential. Trail models come with a part-time four-wheel-drive system and a locking rear differential.

Toyota does not skimp on the 2012 4Runner’s safety features. Standard features include stability and traction control systems, antilock disc brakes and side curtain airbags that deploy when the vehicle begins to roll. The 4Runner’s seats also come with active head restraints to prevent injuries in rear-end collisions. Limited models also come with Toyota’s Safety Connect system that provides emergency response, roadside assistance and vehicle theft recovery.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque

- Jumat, 07 Agustus 2015 No Comments
2012 marks the first model year for Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque crossover SUV. Size-wise, the Evoque sits between the LR4 and the LR2. Even though the Evoque shares a chassis with the LR2, its longer body makes it a larger vehicle. The Evoque is designed to offer a friendlier city driving experience than provided by other Land Rovers—a brand that is known for its excellent off-road vehicles.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque packs quite a bit of style in a small package. The sleek exterior styling is enough to turn heads no matter where the Evoque travels, with its athletically sweeping lines and angular windows that give the vehicle an edgy look. Buyers can choose between either a four-door version of the vehicle or a two-door version with the same exterior dimensions. The vehicle’s roof can be ordered in white, providing a stylish contrast with the rest of the exterior. Land Rover also provides 19-inch wheels as standard equipment, with the option of 20-inch wheels for making an even greater fashion statement.

Land Rover did not stop giving the Range Rover Evoque style on the outside, but continued making bold statements with the vehicle’s interior. The driver can choose one of several colors as well as intensities of ambient lighting for the inside of the vehicle, with the lighting coming from behind the center instrument stack, door panels and foot wells. Buyers can choose between several color combination packages for the interior of the vehicle, giving the Evoque a more customized feel. On base models, an 11-speaker sound system comes standard, with a 17-speaker sound system available as an option.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque breaks from Land Rover tradition by using a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine, instead of a large V8 engine block. Teamed with a turbocharger, though, the engine produces 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque to provide the driver with plenty of thrills both in the city and on the highway. Because of its more fuel-efficient engine, the Evoque achieves an estimated 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, while still allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds.

Even though it is stylish, the Evoque offers some hard advantages over its competitors. Because it is a Land Rover, the Range Rover Evoque does excellent in both snow and off-road situations whenever necessary. The vehicle also comes with several standard safety systems such as a backup camera, parking sensors, a trailer sway control system and curtain airbags that extend down both sides of the vehicle’s interior.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY: AN SUV FOR THE ONE-PERCENT!

- Senin, 30 Maret 2015 No Comments

Starting at $199,495, the 2016 SVAutobiography takes luxury and refinement

to new heights.

Speaking ahead of the model’s world premier at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern stated, “With the SVAutobiography we have taken the opportunity to optimize the luxury execution and precision of the Range Rover while delivering beautiful detailing that considerably enhances the customer’s experience of our flagship vehicle.”

Exclusively crafted at the Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Technical Center in the UK, SVAutobiography features unique exterior design enhancements, an exclusive premium leather interior with unique trim finishes and a supercharged 550-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 engine. As a result, it is the most luxurious and powerful series-production Range Rover in the model’s successful 45-year history.

John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said, “Range Rover originally defined the luxury SUV segment and the new SVAutobiography, developed by

Special Vehicle Operations, takes Range Rover to another level of comfort,

craftsmanship and refinement.”

Replacing the Autobiography Black at the top of the Range Rover lineup, SVAutobiography has a powerful supercharged V8 engine. Shared with the Range Rover Sport SVR, and tuned specifically for the SVAutobiography, this potent engine produces an outstanding 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. The key to the increase in performance of the SVAutobiography is the optimization of the Bosch engine management system and retuning of the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger’s electronic bypass valve, to increase maximum available boost pressure during high-performance driving.

With maximum torque available at 3,500 rpm and a smooth and sophisticated ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the SVAutobiography provides a breath-taking blend of performance, in-gear flexibility and refinement. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission continues to offer seamless gear changes and an adaptive-shift logic that intelligently adjusts to driver behavior. The advanced transmission can also be controlled via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifts, ensuring the perfect combination of refinement and driver engagement.

Dangerous River Crossings

River crossings can be pretty dangerous, especially if you don't know what you're doing. I've crossed countless rivers in vehicles, but fortunately none of those instances involved some reckless moron who doesn't understand the basic tenets of physics.

No matter how big a vehicle is, it can become a boat in a river if the current is strong enough. This includes buses that are loaded full of people. If you see white caps in the water, it's too strong and you should find a safer spot to cross. Case in point:

You can read about the details of this unfortunate accident by clicking here, but basically people were hurt and two little girls died.

Locally, there was a family that several years ago tried to cross a raging river after a storm. The water was so bad that the father told everyone to unbelt before he attempted the crossing, just in case they needed to swim. The mom and several of the kids drowned. The takeaway: if you think a river crossing is dangerous, don't even try it.

Before you cross a river, you need to have a plan. Usually, it's best to cross where others have plenty of times before, that way you don't get in over your head, literally. Test out the depth of the river, check out what the bed is made of (if possible) and try to see if there is a powerful undercurrent. Plan out which way you will go in the water, and exactly where you will exit on the other side. This is why:

Once you're in the water, you need to just drive. If the water is high enough to reach your grille or even the hood, you have to drive fast enough to push out a wake that is about three feet ahead of the SUV. When you exit, you need to do the same thing as climbing a steep hill, with a good run up to the base, then letting off the throttle a little as you crest so you don't launch into the air.

Use Your 4WD or Lose It

Winter is coming, and that means people who live in snow-prone areas like here turn their attention to the SUV or pickup truck they neglected during the warm summer months. I say neglected because not driving your four-wheel drive vehicle all summer is actually shortening the life of the driveline, which can in turn lead to some pretty expensive repairs.

I used to own an SUV and have had some all-wheel drive vehicles as well. While they don't make you immune from sliding on the roads, and so don't excuse people driving like maniacs, they are incredibly nice to have when the roads are packed with snow. All-wheel drive provides a more reassuring ride than front- or rear-wheel drive, but the ultimate is a true four-wheel drive setup. The low gears are indispensable when the going gets tough, allowing you to get home and not be stranded somewhere for a few days in an especially bad storm.

Most people don't think about using the four-wheel drive system on their SUV or truck when the weather's nice. I like to go out into the wilderness, so it was never a problem for me. About once a month, you should drive around with four-wheel drive engaged. Doing this will allow the joints between the driveshaft and the transfer case, as well as the front axle to flex. Inactivity can cause those joints to seize up when four-wheel drive is finally used again, which will lead to failure and an unpleasant experience with your mechanic.

If your four-wheel drive system has a set of low gears, you need to engage the low setting as well and drive around.

And remember that you need to stay on top of the fluids and change intervals that the manufacturer recommends. Doing this will help ensure that your vehicle keeps running smoothly all year long.

’14 AUDI Q7 QUATTRO: BEAUTIFUL BEAST!

- Kamis, 11 September 2014 No Comments

Audi’s do-everything, go-everywhere high-performance people mover.

With the low-speed grunt of a big-block muscle car and the fuel-sipping consumption of an eco-friendly four-cylinder ride, the ‘14 Audi Q7 quattro Tiptronic offers the best of both worlds. On a recent trip from Detroit to Watkins Glen, NY, we had the pleasure to climb behind the wheel of this very luxurious yet sporty seven passenger SUV. We saw for ourselves that a brawny powertrain wrapped around beautiful bodywork can peacefully coexist. So, with our camera gear packed, we headed down the highway and up through the Allegheny Mountains to Watkins Glen International Raceway.

Our destination was the IMSA Tudor United SportsCar Championship for the annual “Six Hours of the Glen.” One of the top endurance races on the circuit; both prototype and production-based sports cars compete for bragging rights. This grueling race tests man and machine, and with a multitude of classes running on the track at the same time, the action is pretty intense. Here, the drivers put on a great show for the fans with their passing maneuvers. It’s also interesting to see the team strategies being played out while some very fast machinery is pushed to its limits on the winding curves and straightaways of this famous racetrack.

Under the hood of our Audi Q7, its clean-burning and quiet 3.0L TDI direct-injected turbo diesel generated 240 horsepower, but its neck-jerking 406 pound-feet of torque were what really got our attention. Tipping into the throttle, the massive Q7 was quick to get out of its own way in hurry, quite a feat considering its curb weight (5,400 pounds.). The Q7’s intuitive eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission had a sweet spot in is power band, allowing us to hurl ourselves past the lines of tractor-trailers lumbering up the steep grades in the Alleghenies.

With the standard Quattro all-wheel drive feeding power to the massive 295/35 R21 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx performance tires and adaptive air suspension, that in Sport mode, lowers ride height and improves the center of gravity for better stability, the Q7 felt as surefooted as its A5 or A6 siblings rolling through the sweeping corners of the roads through upstate New York.

What impressed us even more was its mileage, as we were knocking down close to 28 mpg along the Ohio Turnpike and around 26 when it had to do some hill climbing though Pennsylvania and New York. With a 26-gallon fuel tank, our average cruising range was around 590 miles. Needless to say, we stopped more for snacks than to feed the Q7’s 3.0L TDI V6!

Inside the Q7, there was five-star treatment for seven, as everything was wrapped in leather and gleaming aluminum. But the Q7 retained a sporty look and feel inside and out; due to the S-Line package option. From the command center, the S-Line gives you a three-spoke multifunction sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, brushed aluminum inlays, and on the outside, S-line badging on the door sills and throughout the interior.

On the outside, our Q7 was covered in Glacier White Metallic while clad in unique front and rear bumper and side valences and riding on five-segment, titanium-finished 21-inch wheels. The Q7 looked like a Saturn V rocket, and it sort of felt like one on lift-off as we stomped on the big pedal getting on the interstate and blasted up to 60 mph in just over 7 seconds.

When we arrived at The Glen, we were greeted by fellow racing aficionados from the North American Audi Club who were hanging out at Turn One to see the mighty R8 LMS competing in GTD class. With the awesome sounds coming from the R8’s 500-plus horsepower V10 engines blasting around this historic racecourse, it sent chills up our spine. However, it was knowing there was some Audi Sport DNA in our luxurious yet powerful Q7 people hauler that had us grinning every time we got behind the wheel.

‘14 PORSCHE CAYENNE TURBO S: SCALDING HOT!

- Selasa, 09 September 2014 No Comments

‘Let’s get trucking,” blogs Dan Scanlan after spending some seat time in Porsche’s hottest SUV.

When Porsche entered the luxury sports utility vehicle market in 2002 with the Porsche Cayenne, Porschefiles were horrified that Stuttgart was selling a truck! Well, when a truck has a twin-turbo 550 horsepower V-8 plus sports sedan handling, and 18,507 of the company’s total 42,323 sales in 2013 were Cayennes, the market has spoken. Some say the success of the Cayenne and the four-door Panamera sports sedan (5,421 sold in 2013) translates into profits that can be used to make cars like the 911 Turbo and radical 918 Spyder exotic. Sounds like a good business case to me!

The Cayenne is available with a 300 horsepower V-6 and 380-horsepower hybrid, and three 4.8-liter V-8s - 400-horsepower, a 500-horsepopwer twin-turbo and the twin-turbo 550-horsepower V-8 with max torque of 553 pound-feet in our tester.

Our 4,784 pound test car roared to 60 mph in 5 seconds and 100-mph in 10.2 seconds – crazy fast for a SUV. Launch was instant, all wheels grabbing, with quad exhaust pipes generating a mellow bellow. Under maximum launch conditions, it’ll sprint to 60-mph in 4.5 seconds, pulling an indicated 1.1 G’s on the g-force meter. That’s faster than a ‘14 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. The eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission isn’t a dual-clutch PDK like a 911, but shifted cleanly and quickly in “Sport” mode and staying in Fourth we were ready to tap down a gear or two for passing. Used with restraint, our tester average 21 mpg.

The Turbo S has an active suspension and active all-wheel-drive, plus Dynamic Chassis Control to get rid of body roll in corners. There’s also variable torque distribution to the rear wheels and an electronically controlled rear differential lock. On asphalt, it boasted amazing grip in turns and was really fun to drive. Throw it into a turn and the Cayenne just grabs on and handles the curve with a neutral attitude. Its torque vectoring system brakes the inside rear wheel to also help in a turn.

Its air suspension offers three settings. “Comfort” is perfect for highway touring and off-road. It handled a poorly paved interstate stretch with no harshness. “Normal” is fine around town. “Sport” is what you want when you are hustling two tons of German SUV around – tightly controlled, stiff enough, but it doesn’t beat you up on less-than-perfect roads. The “Sport” suspension setting also hunkers the Cayenne down to 7.2-inches ground clearance. But flip the transmission setting to “Off-Road,” and the Cayenne rises up for 9.5 inches of ground clearance.

Back on the road, the air-spring suspension’s active anti-roll system means the Cayenne Turbo S doesn’t lean much. It doesn’t look like it’s working hard on the skidpad. It just hung on, a touch of understeer if you really pushed it. In almost any turn at speeds that would make a regular SUV cringe, the two-ton Cayenne tracked like it was glued to the road, hydraulic rotary actuators on the axles counteracting body roll. We stitched turns quickly and smoothly with no drama, the digital g-meter indicating we pulled 1-G on our skid pad. We found the power steering extremely accurate and nicely weighted. The ceramic disc brakes were precise in pedal feel with zero fade even after four hard hits from 60 mph.

For 2014, Cayenne still lives with a 2011 redesign and wide low crosshatch grille with a long and sharp 911-style nose. Under the grille there’s a black skid plate. Designers have done a decent job of bringing some 911 styling cues into the hood and fender flow. The fenders have gentle flat-edged flares that frame 21-inch 911 Turbo II wheels and wearing fairly low-profile P295/35R21-inch Michelin performance rubber. The roofline is low and ends with a long spoiler over a tinted window, with huge LED taillights and twin dual-outlet exhaust pipes in a black lower fascia with tow hitch. It certainly isn’t as pretty as a 911, but it looks cool when it’s hunkered down in highway suspension mode. It’s too bad the Turbo S ends its run this year.

You step over carbon fiber doorsills with illuminated “Cayenne Turbo S” logos, and then slide over the sculpted lower side bolsters and into form-fitting perforated leather bucket seats with 18-way power adjustment plus three memory presets each. They held us in comfortably on the skidpad as well as on a six-hour road trip. We were surrounded by leather with aluminum accents and carbon fiber on the dash, doors and console.

As would be expected, the Cayenne is fitted with a complete gauge package with an 8,000-rpm tach with digital speedometer. An analog 190-mph speedometer is on the left. There’s also a color LCD trip computer screen with navigation, audio, performance info (turbo boost and g-forces), even trip mileage and timing. Framing the gauges is a thick-rimmed black stitched leather steering wheel with big paddle shifters. The dash center hosts a large Porsche Communication Management touchscreen with an AM-FM-CD-SiriusXM Burmester sound system that’s powerful enough to rattle windows.

The main console is packed with 33 buttons to adjust suspension, engine, heated/cooled seats, climate control, four-wheel-drive and height, stability and hill descent control, even a gas-saving engine shut-off at stoplights. It’s slathered in carbon fiber and framed in red leather grab handles. A long moonroof stretches past the rear seat passengers. Underfoot, you’ll find alloy-faced pedals. The Sport Chrono Package includes a stopwatch and stores performance data, including lap times or transverse and longitudinal acceleration values and displays it all on the PCM main screen.

Back seat room is generous, with a rear climate control system and outboard heated seas. Under the power tailgate, which doesn’t open high enough to clear my head, there’s decent storage space with a divider that slides on alloy strips. The rear seats split 40/20/40; the raked rear window intrudes on some box cargo capacity.

Our test 2014 Turbo S has a base MSRP of $146,000 and with all options tallied up, hit approximately $161,000. It’s the do-everything, go-anywhere Porsche that showcases the best of what Porsche is known for. I want it!
