The Civic is certainly getting a lot of press at the moment after the launch of the savage Type-R (review on the way soon). But as a model in itself the Civic is so much more than a road rocket. Honda's hatchback hero has always been much more of a family favourite and the latest version is no exception.

Motor Heads Road Test: Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake

- Jumat, 16 Oktober 2015 No Comments
Normally when I sit down to write up a road test I have a stack of stats to sift through and a long list of spec options to write about. However, the XFR-S left me feeling rather different than most other cars, and that does include high performance cars too. Of course, the stats are good, and the options are great but there is something wholly more emotional about this car and it rather make all

The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe

- Rabu, 07 Oktober 2015 No Comments

The 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe is a traditional full-size SUV, complete with a box-frame construction like Chevy’s Silverado pickup truck. Because of its design, the Tahoe is just as comfortable ambling down freeways or city streets as it is trudging through muddy or snow off-road trails. Occupants enjoy a taller ride-height than in crossover vehicles or minivans. Still, the Tahoe offers a very smooth ride and plenty of comforts that will make occupants forget they are riding in a truck.

Seating inside the 2012 Tahoe can accommodate up to nine passengers if outfitted with the split bench front seat. The front seats can be both heated and cooled, while the second seats can be heated and also power-fold into the vehicle’s floor to increase cargo capacity. Cargo capacity can reach 109 cubic feet with the second and third rows of seats folded down.

Buyers have only one engine choice with the Tahoe, a 5.3 liter V8 that puts out 320 horsepower and 335 pound-feet of torque. The engine works with a six-speed automatic transmission to provide power to either just the rear wheels, or to all four for models with the optional four-wheel-drive. Chevy makes four-wheel-drive models with either a two-speed transfer case or a single-speed transfer case that eliminates the low-gear option.

Chevrolet loaded the 2012 Tahoe SUV with a number of technological systems to aid with operating the vehicle. Owners can download an application to their smart phone, which allows them to connect with the Tahoe to check up on the status of the vehicle, schedule maintenance with a local dealer and even contact roadside assistance. An optional rear-view camera helps drivers see obstacles of all sizes when traveling in reverse. Everyone in the Tahoe can enjoy music using the vehicle’s USB, allowing occupants to play music on MP3 players and flash drivers. Also, a Bluetooth connection allows drivers to place phone calls using steering wheel mounted controls, allowing them to stay focused on the task of driving.

If you're in the market for a used SUV, the 2012 Tahoe isn't a bad option. Just keep in mind that if you need to use the third row on a regular basis, cargo space is pretty tight. Also, it won't handle as smoothly as the Traverse or other unibody crossover options. The tradeoff is excellent towing ability, four-wheel drive and the ability to tackle some fairly rough terrain in the great outdoors.

The 2013 SRT Viper: The Snake Strikes Back

- Kamis, 24 September 2015 No Comments

Chrysler took a short hiatus from producing its wonderfully potent Viper sports car, but for the 2013 model year the company brough the Viper back, causing a big wave in the industry. The car was housed under the SRT brand, which caused quite a bit of confusion since the earlier Vipers were Dodges. The changes didn’t stop there, with the Viper being completely redesigned for a more modern high-performance driving experience both on the road and on the track, while thankfully still retaining some of the raw and unbridled aspects of the car.

To start off, the 2013 SRT Viper receives plenty of power via a massive 8.4 liter V-10 engine, complete with overhead valves and variable timing. Output tops out at a deafening 640 horsepower and 600 pound-foot of torque, causing lesser cars to cower in the Viper’s presence. A six speed manual transmission helps transfer power to the car’s rear wheels, providing a pure American muscle driving experience.

New to the Viper line is stability control, which can be completely turned off if a driver wants to have a more “pure” interaction with the car. Launch control also comes standard. A double wishbone suspension in the front and rear give the car even better handling dynamics than before, making the SRT Viper a car that can be driven more often than past Vipers.

SRT continued adding modern touches to the Viper. Curb weight has been lowered to 3,354 pounds, making it 30% lighter than the previous Viper. This lower weight translates into brisker acceleration and better handling characteristics. The car’s new frame is lighter weight, but it is actually 50% stiffer than in previous Vipers.

Not only the driver will enjoy the 2013 SRT Viper, but the passenger will as well. Interior space has been enlarged upon, providing considerably more legroom and headroom to accommodate some of the tallest occupants out there. Instead of a Spartan interior as before, occupants sit on supple leather seats and are treated to soft-touch materials from the doors, dash and center console. Further showing the signs of the times, Chrysler has outfitted the SRT Viper with a navigation screen, heated seats, a Bluetooth connection for talking on the phone with a headset and a USB plug.

To truly enjoy driving the Viper all the time, you would still need to be pretty dedicated to the car, because it's a handful, to say the least. If you want a constantly engaging drive that keeps you on your toes, this is a good option to consider.

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser

Shopping for used cars can be a frustrating process, which is why I'm beginning to offer some information on different models. If you're in the market for an incredibly capable and luxurious SUV, you can't really go wrong with the Toyota Land Cruiser (assuming it fits into your budget).

Toyota’s Land Cruiser is an four-wheeling legend, as it is one SUV that has always performed phenomenally well on rugged off-road courses. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser continues this tradition, adding in an extensive list of rugged off-road technologies as well as features to make the ride more comfortable no matter where your adventure takes you.

One huge advantage of the 2013 Land Cruiser is that previously optional equipment has now all become standard. The equipment list is extensive and covers a variety of both needs and wants. On the outside, the Land Cruiser comes with 18 inch wheels, auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors, fog lamps, xenon headlights, automatic windshield wipers, privacy glass for the rear seats, roof rack and a sunroof. Convenience features include keyless entry and ignition, a DVD entertainment system, four-zone automatic climate control,  a cooling box in the center console, heated front and second row seats, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and a power tilt-and-telescope steering wheel.

Anyone looking to take the 2013 Land Cruiser off the road will not be disappointed. A locking center differential and a ground clearance of 8.9 inches help it tackle a variety of off-road conditions.  A Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System also comes standard, which automatically adjusts the stabilizer bars so the vehicle drives with better stability both on the road and off.  The Land Cruiser also comes with a five-speed crawl control that acts kind of like a cruise control for off-roading (but at low speeds). Multi-Terrain Select allows the driver to change the vehicle’s stability and traction control settings based on the surface the vehicle is traveling on. An Off-Road Turn Assist system automatically puts the brakes on the wheels on the inside corner to help the vehicle turn more sharply, which helps drivers avoid large obstacles such as boulders. Toyota also outfits the Land Cruiser will hill-start assist, which keeps the vehicle from rolling backwards after being stopped on a hill.

Electronic goodies are also extensive in the 2013 Land Cruiser. Drivers benefit from standard Bluetooth connection, adaptive cruise control, a backup camera, navigation with real-time traffic, voice controls and Toyota Etune smartphone apps that allow you to interact with the vehicle both when you are with the vehicle and are away from it. Standard is also the Lexus Safety Connect system, which not only helps you contact help in an emergency but also automatically calls 911 if the system detects the vehicle has been in a collision.

Power comes from a 5.7 liter V8 engine that produces up to 381 horsepower and 401 pound-foot of torque, giving the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser the ability to tackle off-road obstacles with pleasure as well as tow up to 8,500 pounds on the road. Paired with a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission, the Land Cruiser attains an EPA estimated 13 MPG for city driving and 18 MPG for highway driving. A large 24.6 gallon fuel tank gives a driving range of about 442 miles of highway travel.

Basically, the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is like a luxury cruiser crossed with a Jeep. It's incredibly surefooted on trails, yet is easily contends with any luxury SUV out there. While it won't appeal to everyone, if those are two things you want mixed together, it's also comes with the bonus of bullet-proof reliability, making it a great vehicle to own.

The 2012 Dodge Challenger

- Jumat, 11 September 2015 No Comments
Dodge has been heating up the pony car market with its high-performance Challenger coupe. For 2012 the Dodge Challenger features the kind of performance and comfort car buyers have grown to expect from the vehicle. Incorporating even more modern technology, Dodge now offers models with automatic transmissions with steering wheel mounted shift paddles similar to what’s used in many race cars.

SXT models come with a V6 engine that provides the 2012 Challenger with 305 horsepower and 268 pound-foot of torque while still achieving an EPA-estimated 27 mpg on the highway. R/T models come with a legendary HEMI 5.7 liter V8 engine, which pumps out 375 horsepower and 410 pound-foot of torque. Drivers looking for even more power can option for the SRT8 392 model with the 5.7 liter HEMI V8 engine tuned to thunder out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-foot of torque. SXT models come with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, while models with the V8 engine only come with the six-speed manual.

The exterior of the 2012 Dodge Challenger features cool retro design cues that hearken back to the Challengers of the early 1970s. Standard are eighteen-inch alloy wheels, while twenty-inch retro-styled alloy wheels are offered as standard equipment on SRT8 392 models and as optional equipment on R/T models. Black racing stripes on the sides, functional hood scoops and xenon headlights are also standard exterior equipment. Heated side mirrors are available as an option.

Unlike other high-performance pony cars, the 2012 Challenger provides spacious and luxurious seating for up to four adults. All accessories on the Challenger are power-operated, including the front seats. Rear passengers enjoy dual AC power outlets to plug in gadgetry. Optional equipment is extensive for the Dodge Challenger, such as fog lamps, auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite radio, an iPod input jack for the stereo, heated front seats and a sunroof. SRT8 392 models can come with optional sport front seats, which featured bulkier side bolsters to hold the front seat occupants in place during hard cornering.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R

- Rabu, 09 September 2015 No Comments
There’s a reason why the 2012 GT-R is known internally at Nissan as “Godzilla” – it is a monstrous performer both on the road and track. The car offers an aggressive and unique styling that is reminiscent of the old Nissan Skyline models and that will surely make a statement wherever it goes. The best part of the Nissan GT-R is that it offers mind-blowing performance that rivals cars costing two or three times as much.

Crammed under the hood of the 2012 Nissan GT-R is a highly potent 3.8 liter V6 engine block as well as a pair of turbochargers. The engine and turbos combine to produce a peak output of 530 horsepower and 448 pound-foot of torque. Mated to the engine is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Acceleration is extremely fast, with the car sprinting from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds. Despite its incredible ability to perform, the GT-R is a car that just about anyone can drive. The all-wheel-drive and sport suspension provide the driver with a feeling of capability, unlike some high-performance vehicles that fill most drivers with sense of fear or dread.

The incredible experience of driving the 2012 Nissan GT-R does not stop just at performance. Inside, the car gives the driver a feeling of sportiness mixed with luxury. Various interior components, such as the center stack, are made of genuine carbon fiber instead of plastic fashioned to look like it. The front seats are heated and power-adjustable, with highly contoured side bolsters designed to hold you in place during fast and hard cornering. Both front and rear occupants will enjoy the Bose stereo system with eleven speakers, two subwoofers and an MP3 player input jack. The car also comes with navigation, real-time weather reports and a Bluetooth connection for hands-free phone conversations while driving.

The 2012 Ford Escape

- Senin, 07 September 2015 No Comments
The 2012 Ford Escape represents the American automaker’s compact crossover, providing a small and maneuverable vehicle that also packs the utility of much larger SUVs. With the proper equipment, the Escape can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The Escape comes with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive to handle inclement weather or curvy roads.

Ford offers a multitude of technological advancements with the 2012 Escape. It is the only vehicle in its class to come with an Auto Park feature that not only finds viable parallel parking spots, but also steers the vehicle into those spots. Unlike any of its competitors, the Ford offers a hybrid version of the Escape. Ford’s Sync system, which allows the driver to control the stereo through voice commands, is also an option in the Escape.

Powering the Ford Escape are three different engine options. A 2.5 liter four cylinder engine is standard, providing 171 horsepower, while an optional 3.0 liter V6 produces 240 horsepower. Ford offers both a five speed manual and a six speed automatic transmission. Hybrid models come with a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine block that is mated to an electric motor to produce a total of 177 horsepower. The hybrid only comes with a continuously variable transmission so transitions between the electric and gas motors are not noticeable while driving. Escape hybrids that are outfitted with all-wheel-drive make use of a second electric motor that delivers power to the rear wheels as needed.

Parents will enjoy the 2012 Ford Escape’s MyKey system, which allows the vehicle’s owner to program specific keys so the vehicle operates under certain restrictions. Parents can restrict teenagers’ keys so the Escape will not travel faster than 80 mph, as well as restrict the stereo’s volume to only 45 percent of the original volume limit. Another option mutes the stereo until the driver’s seat belt is fastened. Parents can also program the key so the Escape makes audible alarms when it reaches 45, 55 or 65 mph so teenagers are aware of their speed.

Mazda Reclaims the Miata Heritage

- Rabu, 02 September 2015 No Comments
Mazda first rocked the world 26 years ago when it introduced the Miata MX-5. The car promised all the fun of a small roadster, without the headaches of the old classics from other manufacturers. Since then, the Miata has become a favorite of many enthusiasts, accumulating a dedicated base of fans. With the 2016 model a new generation of the vehicle launches, and this time around the car gets back to the basics that first made it great.

The roadster maintains its fun and affordable position in the market, despite many other vehicle increasing in price and becoming more bloated. In fact, Mazda was able to shed about 150 pounds versus the previous generation of the MX-5. The automaker also designed the vehicle to have a perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, which maximizes handling in any situation.

A roadster should be fun in every way, including how it looks. Mazda used its Kodo – Soul of Motion design language for the MX-5, making it appear more modern. With a longer hood, shorter overhangs, wheels pushed to the four corners and an occupant area positioned further back, the vehicle seems to be in motion even when it is parked.

Of course, a roadster is only as good as its experience with the top down, and in that area the new Miata excels. Opening and closing the top is easy enough the driver and passenger can stay seated the whole time. Even though a wind control system is in place, the feeling of having the breeze ruffle your hair can still be enjoyed. Speakers are even embedded in the headrests, making it easy to hear music while driving topless.

Under the hood of the 2016 Miata is a Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that literally breathes life into the car. It puts out a spunky 155 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. Showing that the new model is truly made for enthusiasts, the engine is a mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which provides snappy gear changes without too much effort.

The innovative powertrain on the MX-5 not only makes the car fun to drive, it also helps conserve gas. According to Mazda, the 2016 model achieves 25 percent better fuel economy than the previous generation of the roadster. The EPA estimates the car gets 27 mpg in the city. For those who want the ease of an automatic transmission, it gets 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, which are some impressive numbers.

When Mazda designed the 2016 Miata MX-5, it aimed for the Japanese ideal of Jinba Ittai, which is making the car and driver one. As a result, engineers and designers worked hard on every aspect of the roadster, making them more human-centric than ever before. For example, the different pedals were laid out to go along with the natural movements of a person's feet, increasing comfort during long driving sessions. Visibility is greater, thanks to the A-pillars being positioned back further and the hood dropping down. Other controls in the vehicle were made to be highly ergonomic, making it easy to use them in a variety of situations.

Most people know the Jeep Wrangler is one of the toughest and most capable off-road vehicles in the world. What many people don’t realize is that the 2012 Jeep Wrangler is not only capable of traversing tough trails, but it is also a comfortable cruiser both in the city and on the highway. Despite the Wrangler’s good road manners, it still hasn’t lost its tough edge as a no-nonsense truck.

Powering the 2012 Jeep Wrangler is a highly capable 3.6 liter V6 engine. Peak power tops out at 285 horsepower and 260 pound-foot of torque. With four-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual transmission, the Wrangler achieves an EPA-estimated 21 mpg on the highway. A five-speed automatic transmission is available. The base model comes with an 8.8 inch ground clearance, while Rubicon models come with 10.2 inches of clearance for even better off-road capability. Rubicon models are the most off-road capable, with several features that can take the Wrangler pretty much anywhere imaginable. More heavy-duty axles and 32-inch tires help tackle all kinds of obstacles, as does a disconnecting front sway bar. Rubicon models also come with electronic locking front and rear differentials and rock rails.

For the Wrangler’s interior, buyers have some options. Two-door models come with four seats, while the four-door Unlimited models provide seating for up to five passengers. Everything inside the Wrangler is made to be wiped down after snow, mud, dirt and anything else found during off-road journeys are tracked inside. Still, Jeep offers some standard creature comforts like cruise control, a six-speaker sound system and an auxiliary jack for plugging in an MP3 player. Buyers who option for Unlimited models gain air conditioning. Japanese automaker Toyota has jumped back into the business of making fun cars with the Scion FR-S. The car is a small, lightweight and features rear-wheel-drive. Making it even more of a joy to drive, the car’s weight is fairly evenly distributed and handling is tight with the car overall providing a fun driving experience.

The 2013 Scion FR-S features a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder boxer engine, meaning it lays low and on its side so the car’s weight is closer to the road’s surface for improved handling characteristics. Maximum power output is 200 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 151 pound-foot of torque at 6,600 RPM. Buyers can choose between either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Cars with the automatic transmissions come with paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel and rev-matched downshifts. Zero to sixty acceleration of the FR-S with a manual transmission has been measured at 6.6 seconds.

The interior of the FR-S provides a no-frills performance experience. Instead of adjustable lighting features and other chic features found on other Scions, the FR-S comes with a large tachometer in the middle of the instrument cluster, along with other easy-to-read gauges. The driver and front passenger both sit in race-inspired seats that have large side bolsters designed to hold occupants in place during hard cornering maneuvers. Other interior features include air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power windows and locks, cruise control, eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary input jack for the stereo.

On the exterior the Scion FR-S comes with sleek styling that is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels and stylish rear lights. Buyers can opt for dealer-installed suspension and engine performance parts as well as fog lights.

Overall the FR-S marks a return to a true driver’s car. The interior is not luxurious, but is instead focused on letting the driver focus on squeezing as much performance out of the car as possible. Performance enthusiasts will find joy in the car’s exceptional handling abilities and punchy acceleration, both on the track and any winding country road.

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat

- Jumat, 21 Agustus 2015 No Comments
German automaker Volkswagen has completely redesigned the Passat midsize sedan. The car was designed in Germany, but it is manufactured in Chattanooga, Tennessee and has been designed to suit American needs and wants. The result is a compelling sedan for both families and those who want a car with more room and higher-end features.

Inside, both front and rear occupants enjoy ample room all around. Compared to the 2011 Passat, rear passengers enjoy an additional three inches of legroom, meaning even tall adults can sit comfortably in the back. Road noise is minimal, even while traveling at freeway speeds. Interior surfaces and gauges have a higher-end look and feel than other midsize sedans. VW also offers an optional Fender audio system that has been designed specifically for the Passat’s interior, providing crystal clear sound. The additional space does not stop at the Passat’s trunk, where 15.9 cubic feet provides ample space to stow groceries, luggage or any number of other items. If the trunk does not provide enough space, the rear seats fold down , allowing the cargo area to extend into the backseat area.

Volkswagen provides buyers with plenty of power train choices for the 2012 Passat. 2.5L models come with a 2.5 liter five cylinder engine that produces up to 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission are available. Fuel economy estimates are 22 mpg for city driving and 32 mpg for highway driving. TDI models come with a 2.0 liter four cylinder diesel engine that works with a turbo to produce 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can choose between either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automated manual transmission, with fuel mileage estimated at 31 mpg city and 43 mpg highway. 3.6L models come with the largest and most powerful engine, a 3.6 liter V6 that pumps out 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission is the only option, with fuel mileage coming in at 20 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg in highway driving.

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat comes with several other features to make owning one a pleasurable experience. Optional fog lights turn with the wheel, providing illumination around curves in the road at night. Remote start is also available, allowing the car’s interior to heat up or cool down before occupants get inside. If the Passat is involved in a collision, the Intelligent Crash Response System turns on the hazard lights to warn other cars on the road, unlocks the doors to allow rescuers easy access and shuts off all power to the fuel pump to prevent a fire from starting.
