LAGUNA SECA: MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION!

- Minggu, 23 Agustus 2015 No Comments

‘When it comes to historic racing, it doesn’t get much better than the premier Rolex event in Monterey,’ blogs Mike Matune.

As August arrives, summer begins to wind down, but not before the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (RMMR) treats us to its annual celebration of the racing automobile. Among their celebrated groups this year was Formula 5000. You get a sense of the international character of RMMR when you consider Philip Lewis travelled from Denmark to compete in his ‘72 Matich A50. The car came from the fertile brain of Frank Matich who designed and built the car that achieved noted success in its native Australia and in the U.S.

Didier André brought his ‘77 Greenwood Corvette. A sister car to the one that raced Le Mans and one of five built, the car appeared in only one IMSA race in its day, making it a well preserved time capsule. André made outstanding use of all of the Corvette’s horsepower, slick aerodynamics and road-holding ability to take Second in the Group 4A feature race.

Formula A or 5000 was a late-1960s creation combining stock block pushrod V8s for the most part with Formula car chassis from a variety of constructors. Until its demise in the mid-1970s it played host to big name international stars competing around the world.

Rick Parson’s ‘76 Lola T332C, right, is the actual North American series winning champion with Brian Redman behind the wheel of the Jim Hall/Carl Haas entry. Here Parsons appears to be reprising Alex Zanardi’s infamous “The Pass” on Bryan Herta from the 1996 CART season finale at Laguna Seca!

In addition, RMMR acknowledged the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s GT350 Mustang. Built from the bones of Ford’s “Ponycar”, the GT350 featured just enough modifications to make it a sports car in the eyes of the SCCA. Today they are both highly prized collector cars as well as formidable vintage racecars. Their appeal is nearly universal, Terry Lawlor bringing his example all the way from Australia where it has resided since 2004. Originally a street car, it was converted to a racecar early in its life and ran at tracks across the U.S. It just came off an extensive restoration in preparation for its appearance at Monterey.

Official results showed 35 GT350s competing in Saturday’s feature race with even more present at the track. Here Ross Myers of 3 Dog Garage fame is shown at the bottom of the “Corkscrew” on his way to another quick lap. Myers’ car is one of about three dozen racing GT350Rs. These featured modifications further removing it from its Mustang roots and making it into a no holds barred racecar. To make it even more special, it is the actual car with which Walt Hane took the 1966 SCCA BP Championship. By the way, a tour of Myers’ 3 Dog Garage in Boyertown, PA is a rare treat and certainly worth adding to the Car Guy things to do list.

Now a little history lesson: When the Mustang and GT350 came along, they pushed Ford’s Falcon from the fore as a competitive weapon in Ford’s arsenal. In the early years of Ford’s “Total Performance” movement, Falcons competed the world over in races from ovals to road courses to drags as well as on the international rally circuit. Before they slipped from view, they would contribute their underpinnings to their successor, the Mustang. Michael Eisenberg’s ‘63 Ford Falcon Sprint is a good example of this, having competed in a couple of Trans-Am races, a rally in Mexico and on the SCCA trail before being squirreled away for an extended hiatus.

Mike Eddy’s Falcon started life as a 1963 model in SCCA sedan racing and was re-bodied to take advantage of a weight break for 1964 Falcons. It gained some fame as a “ringer” in the 1966 Trans-Am race at Riverside where it was entered expressly to keep points from the Mustangs’ competitors. Then its travels took it to Europe before returning to the U.S. to live out its active retirement as a vintage racer.

Not to be outdone, Mercury Division tried their hand at motorsports with the Falcon’s cousin, the Mercury Comet. Bill Stroppe would convert Comets into rally cars and test their mettle in one of the meanest events of all, the East African Safari rally. While results weren’t what they had probably originally conceived, two did finish. Following its return the U.S., the car saw action as an SCCA sedan racer. Today Greg Umphenour is the car’s custodian.

While it was a Shelby year to be sure, the Bowtie contingent was amply represented. Here we have Bob Paterson cresting the Rahal Straight on his way into the entry to the “Corkscrew” in his ‘57 Chevrolet Corvette. The car boasts an extensive race history, both in period and lately in the vintage ranks. It appeared back in the day at such legendary venues as Paramount Ranch and Pomona. By 1957 Zora Duntov and his merry band at Chevrolet had the Corvette moving towards competition success with options like mechanical fuel injection and four-speed.

Stuffing an American V8 into a sports car chassis has always been a popular pastime. Here are two examples from the early post-WW ll period in racing history. Steve Schuler’s Allard (4) is the actual car that finished third at Le Mans in 1950 before finding its way stateside to compete at such places as Watkins Glen, Sebring and Torrey Pines. Close behind is Tom Claridge’s Kurtis 500S (88). Frank Kurtis used technology from his Indy cars coupled with Chrysler Hemi power to good avail. The car’s first owner was actor Keenan Wynn, who actively campaigned the car with success around the West and Southwest U.S.

Shoehorning an American V8 into a sports car chassis idea didn’t end there as can be witnessed by Chip Fudge’s ‘68 Bizzarrini Strada GT. Under the sleek Italian lines lies a small-block Chevy sporting a brace of side-draft Webers. The engine sits back almost under the windshield making it something of a front, mid-engine design. Four wheel discs and fully independent suspension complete the package. Unfortunately the car’s lack of development and finances netted little actual racing success, an oft repeated story among specialty car builders.

Bruce Hudkins steals a glance over his shoulder as he passes under the vehicle bridge on his way downhill towards Turn 6. His ‘22 Ford Model T Speedster was rebuilt from a wrecked racecar and has been a vintage competitor for about 25 years. The livery pays tribute to the Ford dealership that Hudkins’ family owned in Kansas in the early part of the 20th century. RMMR covers a broad spectrum of racers from the Pre-1940 to 90s FIA and IMSA competitors.

Do you remember Audi’s venture into Trans-Am racing in the late-1980s with its 200 Quattro? Conventional wisdom said you needed a Ponycar with big V8 horsepower and rear wheel drive, but here came Audi with a sedan sporting four wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.1 liter five cylinder engine. The world quickly learned that putting 500+ horsepower to the ground through twice the wheels made sense, especially when the weather was less than optimal. Steve Ziotkin reintroduced us to that marvelous turbo-chirp sound.

We’re going to let Greg Johnson and his ‘69 Chevrolet Camaro say goodbye from the 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for us. His black Camaro looked sinister. The multiple front driving lights giving a clue to the cars history as an endurance racer at venues such as Sebring and Daytona. At the top of the windshield, mounted on the roof is an orange light designed to identify the car to its pit crew during the nighttime hours of an endurance event.

PEBBLE BEACH 2015: SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS!

- Senin, 17 Agustus 2015 No Comments

Staged on the scenic fairway of the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, the grand finale of the Monterey Classic Car Week - the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance - hosted 200 outstanding collector cars.

After another scorching day at one of the most sunny Monterey Weeks of recent years, the Concours judges finally delivered their verdict on the coveted ‘Best of Show': the ‘24 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A owned by Jim Patterson of Louisville, Kentucky took the top award.

This beautiful classic was acquired by Carrosserie Worblaufen, Switzerland, around 1931 and used as the basis for a Sport Cabriolet they had planned for the long-wheelbase chassis. The result was displayed at the 1933 Geneva Motor Show after which it won the Grand-Prix d’Honneur in Cannes in 1933. The well-balanced proportions of the chassis, with its long hood and low windshield, belie its true size. It gives the appearance of a close-coupled body on the long wheelbase, enhanced by the dual rear-mounted spare wheels. This magnificent car has had only four owners since new; it lived a quiet life in Switzerland and France before being shipped to North America in 2014.

Among the stunning automotive treasures on display on the 18th fairway were precious examples of motoring history: Alfa Romeo to Talbot-Lago, plus a special celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Shelby GT350 Mustang. The iconic early-1970s orange Mercedes-Benz Gullwing C111, originally built to test a Rotary (Wankel) engine, was a consistent head-turner surrounded by rare grand classics. Industry public relations executive Stuart Schorr, above, found it to be one of the most appealing cars on display.

One of the outstanding stories of motoring collaborations involves the creation of the Shelby American version of the Ford Mustang. When Ford asked Carroll Shelby in the early-mid 1960s to look at creating a performance version of the Mustang, no one expected the results to be an automotive legend. The Shelby Mustang GT350, launched in 1965, became an iconic game-changer for the Mustang on the street and racetrack.

Of the five immaculate ‘65 Shelby GT350s on display at the Concours (plus three 1966 models), one was entered by a racing legend: Bobby Rahal. The three-times CART Champion acquired the car after it had been left in a field for 27 years. After a two-year restoration, the 289/305 Mustang is now back in its glorious original state.

Following the Concours win of a Ferrari in 2014 – a ‘54 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe belonging to Jon Shirley – the organizers had planned a feature display for the ‘Prancing Horse’ marque in 2015.

Among the stunning, mostly red, Prancing Horse displays, is a particularly interesting former racecar - once driven by Mike Hawthorn. The ‘53 Ferrari 250 MM Vignale Spyder is now owned by Kurt A. Engelhorn who has great joy in entering historic rallies and races, including here at Laguna Seca. “The car was restored before I bought it, but it is very driveable and a great deal of fun,” said the owner who lives in Switzerland.

For Mr Engelhorn, classic cars have been a passion for some twenty years and his collection is varied from a Lotus 7 to the Jaguar XK120 that broke a record in Belgium on the Jabbeke Highway in 1953 in the hands of the company’s Chief Test Engineer, Norman Dewis. The car achieved a remarkable speed for what was essentially a production car, of 172.4 mph (277.4 kph).

“Next year I hope to return to Pebble Beach with an original Ford GT40 which is currently under restoration” he continued. “Pebble Beach is a very beautiful event for me and my wife comes with me as she loves to play golf.”

For the many thousands of visitors to have taken part in the very special occasions that make up the Monterey Classic Car Week, 2015 will go down in history as the best yet. Another measure of its success is the prospect of raising some two million dollars for local charities, a figure that is nearly double that of past years.

Sam & Emily Mann's '37 Delahaye 145 Franay Cabriolet, above, thrilled spectators and judges alike. As the Official Timepiece of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Rolex maintains its shared motivation: a passion for endurance, innovation and tradition, with total success.

2015 LAGUNA SECA: SHELBY MUSTANGS RULE!

- Sabtu, 15 Agustus 2015 No Comments

Real 1965-1966 Shelby GT350 & GT350R Mustangs are showcased in this year’s Heritage Display for the track’s Featured Marque.

Today, when John Atzbach of Seattle drove his ‘65 Shelby GT 350R Mustang through the turns and straights of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, it was not because he was rehearsing for the upcoming weekend of racing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Rather, he was accommodating a special photo shoot - squeezed between practice sessions for 15 groups of historic cars here - with three of nine GT 350s (from 1965 and 1966).

"I feel very fortunate to be in possession of this remarkable car," said Atzbach, above, of his chassis #002, which is reportedly worth well north of $1 million dollars. But was dressed in grey primer and rust, having spent decades on a trailer in an open barn, when Atzbach acquired it two years ago. It was the factory's team race car for the first half of the 1965 season, driven by Ken Miles and others, taking four seconds and 12 firsts in 16 races. Then it became a test and development car for all other R models built after that."

"I enjoy so much sharing this car with the American public and especially those who know the history of the car - why it is important and how it has impacted the automobile industry," said Atzbach. His sentiments are shared by many of the owners here, especially those among the impressive group of 38 Shelby GT 350 Mustangs that will race on Saturday.

"This is more than just a bucket of bolts," said Shelby GT 350 Brand Manager Jim Owen. "There is an attitude, there is a feeling...there is a joie de vivre around this car that really makes it special. That attitude and performance of the car is what has made it an icon 50 years later."

Though the GT 350 is celebrating half a century of glory, there is a century's worth of historic cars competing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which serves as one of the cornerstones of the Monterey Peninsula's Classic Car Week. The event continues with racing for eight classes today and seven on Sunday.

BMWUSA RACECARS: THREE FOR THE ROAD!

- Selasa, 04 Agustus 2015 No Comments

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will host three fan-favorite BMW racecars.

Three BMWUSA Classic racecars will run in the Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 13-16.  Entries include the famous No. 25 BMW 3.0 CSL, BMW M1 IMSA Group 4 endurance racer and the BMW M5 IMSA Bridgestone Supercar Championship 1994-95 winner. Fans and media are encouraged to follow along on Twitter @BMWUSAClassic.

The No. 25 BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 celebrates the 40th anniversary of winning the 1975 12 Hours of Sebring. This 3.0 CSL is one of five BMW Motorsport chassis built and campaigned in North America in the 1975 & 1976 IMSA Camel GT Series in Group 4 and 5 specifications. Campaigned under the racing numbers 24 and 25, the CSL enjoyed considerable success, winning at Sebring, Riverside, Daytona and Talladega and at Laguna Seca in 1975. At the Rolex Reunion, the BMW 3.0 CSL No. 25 will be driven by BMW of North America President and CEO, Ludwig Willisch. Willisch will run in Group 4A:1973-1981 FIA, IMSA with races on Saturday, August 15th.

The second entry is the No. 2 BMW M1 IMSA Group 4 that was campaigned by BMW of North America at the 24 Hours of Daytona and Mosport during the 1981 season and driven by David Hobbs, Mark Surer, and Dieter Quester.

As racing regulations evolved in the mid-1970s, BMW Motorsport saw an opportunity to challenge arch-rival Porsche in a new racing series by designing and manufacturing a purpose-built racecar and a street version for sale to the public, as stipulated by the rules. The BMW M1, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a Paul Rosche-designed, mid-mounted 3.5-liter, twin-cam M88 Six engine, debuted at the 1978 Paris Auto Show.

However, development and production delays with outside contractors caused its appearance to coincide with the demise of the racing formula for which it was created. The quick thinking solution was the fast and furious ProCar Series that preceded European Formula 1 races.

A few of the M1 ProCars were imported to the US, modified for endurance racing and successfully raced in the popular IMSA GTO Series. BMW of North America only entered its M1 IMSA Group 4 in the longer races of the 1981 season as the company’s racing program shifted focus to the new M1/C prototype for the shorter races. This M1 IMSA Group 4 (Chassis No. 4301223) was the spare car for the BMW of North America team and appears to have seen limited racing action. The No. 2 IMSA Group 4 M1will be driven by Time Inc. auto tester, Jason Harper. Harper will also run in Group 4A with Willisch in two races on Saturday, August 15th.

The final BMW entry in the annual event is the BMW M5 IMSA Bridgestone Supercar champion from 1994 and 1995. The IMSA Bridgestone Supercar Championship featured the great cars of the mid-1990 in a sprint-racing format. This BMW M5 topped Porsche, Nissan, Lotus, Corvette, Ferrari and Mazda, among other “supercars” of the day. The engine uses the basic components from the production unit while Zytec Engineering, working with BMW Motorsport, tuned it. It is the last generation of this engine design, first seen in the 1975 3.0 CSL and the M1 Procar.

BMWNA’s now-classic championship ad and poster read, The 1994 IMSA Supercar Champion Has Something Exotic Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche Competitors Don’t. Four Doors.

David Donohue, son of legendary American driver Mark Donohue, won his first professional racing championship behind the wheel of this BMW M5 in 1994. Prepared by Ed Arnold Racing, of Oaks, PA, this car was never sidelined by a mechanical failure. Winning or finishing second in all but one of eight races, Donohue won the IMSA Bridgestone Supercar Championship. BMW won the manufacturers crown. David Donohue is re-united with his car for the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion. Donohue will run in Group XX in two races on Saturday, August 15th.

JD CLASSICS: EX-FANGIO C-TYPE WINS AT LE MANS LEGEND!

- Jumat, 19 Juni 2015 No Comments

Originally raced by Juan Manuel Fangio and brought to the U.S. by Sarasota Café Racer Bill Tracy in the 1970s, C-Type wins its class in the Legend marking its

22nd award in 25 races.

The unstoppable ex-Fangio C-Type took home a class win at the Le Mans Legend this year, followed by the team’s Jaguar T33 in second place. Taking its 22nd award in 25 races, the team’s C-Type is unrivalled in historic racing events today. Currently owned and raced by JD Classics, the bronze C-Type Jaguar had originally been raced in South America by Fangio. Bill Tracy, left,  was an airlines Captain in the early-1970s when he discovered the C-Type on a trip to Argentina. It was not running and in need of a full restoration. In 1976, Tracy and his wife, Jackie, drove their restored C-Type around Laguna Seca and reunited Fangio with his Jaguar racecar. That year Jaguar was the featured marque at the racetrack.

Le Mans Legend organizers this year broadened the event’s eligibility criteria, allowing Ford GT40s and Cobras to compete. Nevertheless, JD Classics’ entries each put in impressive qualifying performances, with the Costin-Lister, driven by Chris Ward sitting 8th in a field of 62.

Not far behind was the team’s Lightweight E-Type driven by Steve Soper, which qualified in 12th place, followed by the ex-Fangio C-Type with John Young at the wheel and the Cooper T33 driven by JD Classics’ Managing Director Derek Hood. Wil Arif in the team’s XK120 rounded out a strong qualifying performance.

Three GT40s led the pack as the race got underway with a rolling start, and Chris Ward drove the Lister-Costin brilliantly up to fifth place, despite being down on power compared with the cars ahead. An issue with the car saw the Lister-Costin fall back down the field while the other JD Classics’ entries battled hard in the top half of a competitive pack. After four laps, JD Classics had performed the mandatory minute-long pit stop on all their entries, leaving them to race to the finish line.

It was the Lightweight E-Type that came home first, rounding out a top 10 that included seven of the much more powerful GT40s and Cobras. The ex-Fangio C-Type topped its class with the Cooper T33 coming in just behind, giving JD Classics an incredible one-two finish in the 1949-1954 class. It’s the latest in a series of impressive finishes for JD Classics this year, including a win for its ‘74 Ford Cologne Capri at the Spa Classic.

QUICK VIC: VIC ELFORD CELEBRATES 80th BIRTHDAY!

- Rabu, 10 Juni 2015 No Comments

Iconic racer was one of the fastest drivers in the highly competitive Sixties and Seventies racing scene.

Vic Elford’s lap records include Targa Florio, Nurburgring, Daytona, Sebring, Norisring, Monza, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Riverside and Le Mans. He was the first driver to lap Le Mans at over a 150 mph average in the Porsche long-tail 917 in 1970.

Known as “Quick Vic” to friends and competitors, Elford is one of the few drivers to excel in sports cars, rally cars, and Formula 1 at a championship level.

His 1968 season began by winning the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in a Porsche 911, followed by an overall win the next weekend in Daytona at the Rolex 24 Hour race – Porsche’s first 24-Hour race victory. He finished second at the 12 Hours of Sebring a month later, then in May scored an epic victory at the Targa Florio, considered the greatest win in Targa history. Two weeks later Vic won the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometers. Then in his first F1 race in July, Vic took an out-classed Cooper to a stunning fourth-place finish in the soaking-wet French Grand Prix.

Despite beginning the second lap of the ten-lap, 450 mile race more than 18 minutes behind, Vic and co-driver Umberto Maglioli came back to win the 1968 Targa Florio with their Porsche 907 by over a minute. In recognition of his efforts, Porsche dedicated their traditional victory poster not to the car, but to the driver for the first and only time.

Although he raced for Porsche for five years and was the only driver to race every version of the Porsche 917, Elford was one of the most versatile drivers of his or any era. Elford raced in Sports Cars, Rally Cars, Formula 1, CanAm, and the Daytona 500 of NASCAR.

During the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, when a Ferrari crashed in front of him, Vic stopped mid-race to try to extricate the driver from his burning car. Television cameras caught the action and Vic was named “Knight of the National Order of Merit” or Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite by French President Georges Pompidou for his act of courage and heroism.

Vic has been a featured guest at all four previous Porsche Rennsport Reunions, and will attend the upcoming Rennsport Reunion V this September 25-27, 2015 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Elford was elected to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001 and currently lives in South Florida, with his wife Anita.
