Jaguar Land Rover Working On Several Electric Vehicles

While everyone's raving about the new Tesla Model X, few people took note of another important announcement in the quest to electrify SUVs: Jaguar Land Rover is working on several concept models that could one day lead to an electric off-road machine.

It's a smart and necessary move as more consumers begin to demand partially- or fully-electric vehicles, particularly in the luxury segments. German automakers are toying with similar ideas, which has spurred Jaguar Land Rover further even more as it quests to be taken more seriously in the grand scheme of things.

One concept has a mild hybrid powertrain. It uses brake energy to charge up a battery, which then supplies electricity for ancillary functions like the air conditioning, not moving the vehicle forward in any way. The hybrid module is located between the engine and transmission, making it a fairly compact design. Some are questioning why the automaker is even playing with a half measure, but they're forgetting it's a step in the right direction.

The second concept is a plug-in hybrid which actually uses electricity to turn the wheels. The electric motor is still placed between the engine and transmission, but the vehicle can drive using either a mixture of the gasoline engine and electric motor, or on only electricity for limited distances. This is a setup that's become increasingly common, such as the plug-in hybrid version of the new Volvo XC90.

Looking more toward the future is the third concept, which has a fully-electric powertrain. It's designed for the company's lightweight aluminum vehicle platform, which is being used successfully in several new models like the Jaguar XE. An electric motor is mated to each of the axles, meaning the vehicle is by default all-wheel drive.

Jaguar Land Rover is also playing with some other cool tech that would make better use of energy, including infrared panels strategically placed inside vehicles to help keep people warm and seats that can draw warm air through them to help everyone cool off during the summer.

RANGE ROVER SENTINEL: LOCKED & LOADED!

- Senin, 07 September 2015 No Comments

A luxury fortress on wheels, the Range Rover Sentinel is the first armored Land Rover to be fully engineered by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO).

The new Range Rover Sentinel is hand built at SVO’s Oxford Road facility, providing the highest levels of protection an SUV can offer against a wide variety of attacks. Based on the standard wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography, it delivers the supreme comfort, command driving position and all-terrain capability of the Range Rover, while providing peace of mind thanks to outstanding occupant protection. Outwardly, the Sentinel looks identical to the standard model.

This mobile fortress is designed to withstand the most damaging and targeted of threats, including penetration by 7.62mm high-velocity, armor-piercing incendiary rounds. This exceptional vehicle delivers lateral protection against up to 15kg Trinitrotoluene (TNT) blasts and defense against DM51 grenade explosions from both beneath the floor and above the roof.

At its core is a specially developed six-piece armored passenger cell, made of super-high-strength steel, providing world-class protection from attack. The standard glass has been replaced by multi-laminated, optical quality armor privacy glass, providing excellent clarity for the driver and occupants, while also delivering bullet protection.

The Range Rover Sentinel is fully certified to VR8 standard against ballistic threats by QinetiQ®, an independent organization that was formerly part of the British Government’s Defense Establishment Research Agency.

John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said: “The Range Rover Sentinel is one of the most extraordinary Range Rovers ever produced. It has been expertly engineered by Special Vehicle Operations to provide class leading levels of protection to occupants against extreme attack, whilst retaining the Range Rover’s luxury and refinement with off road capability."

Sentinel retains the plentiful legroom of the standard model that comfortably seats two full-size adults in the rear. A payload of up to 650kg can be carried thanks to revised Dynamic Stability Control and Ride Stability Control systems. The Command Driving Position found in all Range Rover vehicles remains, giving the driver a clear and unobscured view of the surroundings, particularly useful in the event of an attack.

The suspension has been up-rated to ensure Range Rover’s legendary ride comfort and handling are retained, yet still delivers precise on-road dynamics to allow occupants to escape attack. The Sentinel has undergone the same testing as a standard production vehicle and retains the outstanding off-road capability for which Land Rover is famous.

The Sentinel has an anti-tamper exhaust, a self-sealing fuel tank, auxiliary back-up battery and a split charging system. The 100-mm opening in the driver’s window for document delivery ensures the vehicle is secure. The load space features anti-smash protective glass ensuring the cabin remains a “safe house.”

When it is time to leave in a hurry, run flat inserts in the tires – fitted to special 20-inch split rim alloy wheels – allow the vehicle to be driven even if the tyres are deflated. This system ensures that however determined the attack, the Range Rover Sentinel can use the considerable performance of its 340PS 3.0-litre V6 supercharged gas engine in conjunction with a specially-calibrated ZF 8-speed automatic transmission to escape. In addition, 380-mm front and 365-mm rear ventilated disc brakes, both with high-density pads, ensure impressive stopping power when needed.

If the worst happens and the main doors are blocked by an accident or an attack, occupants can leave the vehicle via the Emergency Escape System behind the rear seats. Despite this special security feature, the basic design is uncompromising and the Range Rover Sentinel is still equipped with the elegant split-level tailgate of the standard production vehicle.

Optional protection features include under floor and under hood fire suppression systems, a customer configurable siren system, emergency service lights and an external speaker system to address people outside the vehicle from the safety of the cabin. The Range Rover Sentinel is unmatched in capability and protection by any third-party conversion. Externally, it is discreet and almost identical in appearance to the vehicle from which it is derived, with few visual clues as to what lies beneath the skin. A full driver-training program is also provided to ensure drivers are capable of handling the vehicle to maximum effect in the most challenging circumstances.

Despite the huge levels of security offered by the vehicle’s armor and occupant protection systems, the Range Rover Sentinel remains a Range Rover to the core. It delivers the same exceptional levels of luxury ride and comfort as a conventional Range Rover Autobiography. Customers can still choose from an extensive range of exterior paint colors; and Ebony, Ivory or Dark Cherry interior color ways with leather headlining an option. A range of bespoke options is available on request.

Standard Range Rover features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing and Surround Camera Security incorporating T-junction view also lend themselves perfectly to the duties this very special Range Rover is designed to perform.

The Range Rover Sentinel is fully EU Homologated, available in the UK, Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East with VR8 level certification. Available to order from the beginning of September 2015, the Range Rover Sentinel has a guide price from under €400,000 and benefits from a three-year, 50,000-mile warranty. Additional global aftersales support includes scheduled visits each year by a specialized technician.

The Sentinel will make its global debut at the Defence and Security Equipment International Exhibition at London’s ExCeL arena from September 15th to 18th 2015. For more information, please visit http://www.landrover.com/fleet-and-business/specialist-sales.html

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque

- Jumat, 07 Agustus 2015 No Comments
2012 marks the first model year for Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque crossover SUV. Size-wise, the Evoque sits between the LR4 and the LR2. Even though the Evoque shares a chassis with the LR2, its longer body makes it a larger vehicle. The Evoque is designed to offer a friendlier city driving experience than provided by other Land Rovers—a brand that is known for its excellent off-road vehicles.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque packs quite a bit of style in a small package. The sleek exterior styling is enough to turn heads no matter where the Evoque travels, with its athletically sweeping lines and angular windows that give the vehicle an edgy look. Buyers can choose between either a four-door version of the vehicle or a two-door version with the same exterior dimensions. The vehicle’s roof can be ordered in white, providing a stylish contrast with the rest of the exterior. Land Rover also provides 19-inch wheels as standard equipment, with the option of 20-inch wheels for making an even greater fashion statement.

Land Rover did not stop giving the Range Rover Evoque style on the outside, but continued making bold statements with the vehicle’s interior. The driver can choose one of several colors as well as intensities of ambient lighting for the inside of the vehicle, with the lighting coming from behind the center instrument stack, door panels and foot wells. Buyers can choose between several color combination packages for the interior of the vehicle, giving the Evoque a more customized feel. On base models, an 11-speaker sound system comes standard, with a 17-speaker sound system available as an option.

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque breaks from Land Rover tradition by using a 2.0 liter four cylinder engine, instead of a large V8 engine block. Teamed with a turbocharger, though, the engine produces 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque to provide the driver with plenty of thrills both in the city and on the highway. Because of its more fuel-efficient engine, the Evoque achieves an estimated 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, while still allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds.

Even though it is stylish, the Evoque offers some hard advantages over its competitors. Because it is a Land Rover, the Range Rover Evoque does excellent in both snow and off-road situations whenever necessary. The vehicle also comes with several standard safety systems such as a backup camera, parking sensors, a trailer sway control system and curtain airbags that extend down both sides of the vehicle’s interior.

4 Ways To Reduce The Cost Of Owning A Land Rover

Most people would love to own a big 4x4 vehicle like one of the latest editions released by British manufacturer Land Rover. However, those machines can be very expensive to keep on the road, and so they are often out of the price range folks are willing to pay. However, we’ve discovered lots of simple ways you can drive the costs down and make your money stretch further. You’ll still have to

Is Ford the Copycat Automaker?

- Kamis, 02 April 2015 No Comments
Back in its heyday, Ford was responsible for some rather iconic vehicle designs, such as the original Thunderbird and the Mustang. These days the Blue Oval's designs are more infamous than breathtaking, because a growing number of people are accusing the company of outright stealing designs from other automakers.

The boiling point came recently when Bentley's head designer called out Lincoln (which Ford owns) for cribbing the design of the Flying Spur for the Continental Concept. I have to admit, the first thing I thought when I saw the new Lincoln concept was how much it looked like a Bentley, while rear fascia had a weird Audi/Volvo bastardized mixture going on. The closer I look at the vehicle, the more convinced I become that Lincoln might have actually copied the design.

When the new Ford Fusion launched, plenty of people said it looked like a wanna-be Aston Martin. I used to deny it, but looking at it closely there's definitely a strong resemblance that you just can't deny.

Being a Land Rover fan, I immediately noticed that the 2016 Ford Explorer is incredibly similar-looking to the Range Rover. What's funny is that a Chinese company copied the Range Rover, and people went ape. Ford does it, and I guess that's okay because it's Ford? Go figure.

I started digging more and found accounts of how Ford supposedly cribbed the design of the VW Passat to create the 2005 Ford Five Hundred, and that the Lincoln MKC is a ripoff of the Audi Q5.

Is Ford really so unoriginal? Can it just not design nice-looking vehicles without cheating off others' work? Sure, the company does have some original designs, like the Mustang, but the trend lately seems to be stealing from the luxury brands of Europe, which in effect cheapens their products.

RANGE ROVER SVAUTOBIOGRAPHY: AN SUV FOR THE ONE-PERCENT!

- Senin, 30 Maret 2015 No Comments

Starting at $199,495, the 2016 SVAutobiography takes luxury and refinement

to new heights.

Speaking ahead of the model’s world premier at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern stated, “With the SVAutobiography we have taken the opportunity to optimize the luxury execution and precision of the Range Rover while delivering beautiful detailing that considerably enhances the customer’s experience of our flagship vehicle.”

Exclusively crafted at the Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Technical Center in the UK, SVAutobiography features unique exterior design enhancements, an exclusive premium leather interior with unique trim finishes and a supercharged 550-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 engine. As a result, it is the most luxurious and powerful series-production Range Rover in the model’s successful 45-year history.

John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said, “Range Rover originally defined the luxury SUV segment and the new SVAutobiography, developed by

Special Vehicle Operations, takes Range Rover to another level of comfort,

craftsmanship and refinement.”

Replacing the Autobiography Black at the top of the Range Rover lineup, SVAutobiography has a powerful supercharged V8 engine. Shared with the Range Rover Sport SVR, and tuned specifically for the SVAutobiography, this potent engine produces an outstanding 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. The key to the increase in performance of the SVAutobiography is the optimization of the Bosch engine management system and retuning of the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger’s electronic bypass valve, to increase maximum available boost pressure during high-performance driving.

With maximum torque available at 3,500 rpm and a smooth and sophisticated ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the SVAutobiography provides a breath-taking blend of performance, in-gear flexibility and refinement. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission continues to offer seamless gear changes and an adaptive-shift logic that intelligently adjusts to driver behavior. The advanced transmission can also be controlled via the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifts, ensuring the perfect combination of refinement and driver engagement.
