‘15 GOLD CUP: GOING FOR SVRA GOLD AT VIR!

- Jumat, 02 Oktober 2015 No Comments

Mike Matune stays dry long enough to bring us coverage of the wet and wild

Gold Cup weekend at VIR.

With a nod towards poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the story of the 2015 Gold Cup weekend at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) could be wrapped up in the phrase, ”Water, water, everywhere …”. The point is illustrated by David Pintaric’s Corvette, above, with its grille full of VIR landscape and water teaming off every inch of the car as it drags a cloud of spray behind. A torrential downpour covered all three days of the race weekend. SVRA and Trans-Am competitors carried on through frequently arduous conditions to provide visuals only seen during wet weather racing.

David Nettleship splashes through Turn 6 in his Crossle 45F Formula Ford, right, throwing rooster tails off all four wheels. Normally in this corner racers ride the curb, sometimes all the way over to the “Gator Teeth” but the rain line required them to move further from the apex to avoid the standing water.

A rain tire can pump a considerable amount of water off the road surface; one source claiming that a Formula 1 rain tire displaces something like 60 liters (15 gallons) per second. Looking at the spray behind Chip Vance’s Lola T87/90 (Indy Lights) confirms this.

Rain can be the great equalizer on a racetrack, frequently resulting in the emergence of Giant Killers. The role is often taken by small, closed, FWD sedans like Shea Brown’s Fiat 128. Brown’s car started off as a “Chump Car” he found and decided was much too nice to spend its life in that venue. Since its conversion to a vintage racer, it has shown increasing speed as driver and car development have progressed.

Logan Dernoshek drove his Dad, Warren’s Yenko Stinger in its debut appearance. The car has actual Stinger DNA, although it was re-bodied when the rust worm proved to be too pervasive. Its preparation level mirrors that common when the cars were new with allowances for modern safety issues. The elder Dernoshek’s affinity for Stingers comes naturally as he served as one of Don Yenko’s race mechanics during the heyday of racing at Yenko Chevrolet.

Mike Unger describes his Datsun 240Z as an “Old Soldier” having been run in the 1980s in ITS, before he acquired it about 15 years ago and began its conversion to an SVRA Group 8 vintage racer. Along the way it made occasional forays into SCCA E/P. Watching Unger on track reminded me just what an impact these cars made on the racetrack and on the street, helping Datsun (Nissan) in particular, and Japanese manufactures in general, establish themselves “up market” from the econo-boxes for which they were initially known.

Production car racing is constantly evolving with series, sanctioning bodies, cars and manufacturers coming and going. But along that journey some stand out, like the Motorola Cup and the Cobra R. The Motorola Cup featured frequently televised events with close racing. The Cobra R was Ford’s contribution to the factory Special. Bill Foster deserves Kudos as he and his Cobra were frequently on course carving up VIR while making wonderful noises despite the continuous rain.

As mentioned, Trans-Am cars shared the bill with SVRA’s vintage racers. Today’s Trans-Am is a 12-race series for three classes of cars categorized by preparation levels. Both American and international manufacturers are represented. Kerry Hitt’s Cadillac CTS is an example of the fastest class. These cars feature 850 horsepower engines, tube frames with live rear axles and facsimile fiberglass bodywork.

LAGUNA SECA: MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION!

- Minggu, 23 Agustus 2015 No Comments

‘When it comes to historic racing, it doesn’t get much better than the premier Rolex event in Monterey,’ blogs Mike Matune.

As August arrives, summer begins to wind down, but not before the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (RMMR) treats us to its annual celebration of the racing automobile. Among their celebrated groups this year was Formula 5000. You get a sense of the international character of RMMR when you consider Philip Lewis travelled from Denmark to compete in his ‘72 Matich A50. The car came from the fertile brain of Frank Matich who designed and built the car that achieved noted success in its native Australia and in the U.S.

Didier André brought his ‘77 Greenwood Corvette. A sister car to the one that raced Le Mans and one of five built, the car appeared in only one IMSA race in its day, making it a well preserved time capsule. André made outstanding use of all of the Corvette’s horsepower, slick aerodynamics and road-holding ability to take Second in the Group 4A feature race.

Formula A or 5000 was a late-1960s creation combining stock block pushrod V8s for the most part with Formula car chassis from a variety of constructors. Until its demise in the mid-1970s it played host to big name international stars competing around the world.

Rick Parson’s ‘76 Lola T332C, right, is the actual North American series winning champion with Brian Redman behind the wheel of the Jim Hall/Carl Haas entry. Here Parsons appears to be reprising Alex Zanardi’s infamous “The Pass” on Bryan Herta from the 1996 CART season finale at Laguna Seca!

In addition, RMMR acknowledged the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s GT350 Mustang. Built from the bones of Ford’s “Ponycar”, the GT350 featured just enough modifications to make it a sports car in the eyes of the SCCA. Today they are both highly prized collector cars as well as formidable vintage racecars. Their appeal is nearly universal, Terry Lawlor bringing his example all the way from Australia where it has resided since 2004. Originally a street car, it was converted to a racecar early in its life and ran at tracks across the U.S. It just came off an extensive restoration in preparation for its appearance at Monterey.

Official results showed 35 GT350s competing in Saturday’s feature race with even more present at the track. Here Ross Myers of 3 Dog Garage fame is shown at the bottom of the “Corkscrew” on his way to another quick lap. Myers’ car is one of about three dozen racing GT350Rs. These featured modifications further removing it from its Mustang roots and making it into a no holds barred racecar. To make it even more special, it is the actual car with which Walt Hane took the 1966 SCCA BP Championship. By the way, a tour of Myers’ 3 Dog Garage in Boyertown, PA is a rare treat and certainly worth adding to the Car Guy things to do list.

Now a little history lesson: When the Mustang and GT350 came along, they pushed Ford’s Falcon from the fore as a competitive weapon in Ford’s arsenal. In the early years of Ford’s “Total Performance” movement, Falcons competed the world over in races from ovals to road courses to drags as well as on the international rally circuit. Before they slipped from view, they would contribute their underpinnings to their successor, the Mustang. Michael Eisenberg’s ‘63 Ford Falcon Sprint is a good example of this, having competed in a couple of Trans-Am races, a rally in Mexico and on the SCCA trail before being squirreled away for an extended hiatus.

Mike Eddy’s Falcon started life as a 1963 model in SCCA sedan racing and was re-bodied to take advantage of a weight break for 1964 Falcons. It gained some fame as a “ringer” in the 1966 Trans-Am race at Riverside where it was entered expressly to keep points from the Mustangs’ competitors. Then its travels took it to Europe before returning to the U.S. to live out its active retirement as a vintage racer.

Not to be outdone, Mercury Division tried their hand at motorsports with the Falcon’s cousin, the Mercury Comet. Bill Stroppe would convert Comets into rally cars and test their mettle in one of the meanest events of all, the East African Safari rally. While results weren’t what they had probably originally conceived, two did finish. Following its return the U.S., the car saw action as an SCCA sedan racer. Today Greg Umphenour is the car’s custodian.

While it was a Shelby year to be sure, the Bowtie contingent was amply represented. Here we have Bob Paterson cresting the Rahal Straight on his way into the entry to the “Corkscrew” in his ‘57 Chevrolet Corvette. The car boasts an extensive race history, both in period and lately in the vintage ranks. It appeared back in the day at such legendary venues as Paramount Ranch and Pomona. By 1957 Zora Duntov and his merry band at Chevrolet had the Corvette moving towards competition success with options like mechanical fuel injection and four-speed.

Stuffing an American V8 into a sports car chassis has always been a popular pastime. Here are two examples from the early post-WW ll period in racing history. Steve Schuler’s Allard (4) is the actual car that finished third at Le Mans in 1950 before finding its way stateside to compete at such places as Watkins Glen, Sebring and Torrey Pines. Close behind is Tom Claridge’s Kurtis 500S (88). Frank Kurtis used technology from his Indy cars coupled with Chrysler Hemi power to good avail. The car’s first owner was actor Keenan Wynn, who actively campaigned the car with success around the West and Southwest U.S.

Shoehorning an American V8 into a sports car chassis idea didn’t end there as can be witnessed by Chip Fudge’s ‘68 Bizzarrini Strada GT. Under the sleek Italian lines lies a small-block Chevy sporting a brace of side-draft Webers. The engine sits back almost under the windshield making it something of a front, mid-engine design. Four wheel discs and fully independent suspension complete the package. Unfortunately the car’s lack of development and finances netted little actual racing success, an oft repeated story among specialty car builders.

Bruce Hudkins steals a glance over his shoulder as he passes under the vehicle bridge on his way downhill towards Turn 6. His ‘22 Ford Model T Speedster was rebuilt from a wrecked racecar and has been a vintage competitor for about 25 years. The livery pays tribute to the Ford dealership that Hudkins’ family owned in Kansas in the early part of the 20th century. RMMR covers a broad spectrum of racers from the Pre-1940 to 90s FIA and IMSA competitors.

Do you remember Audi’s venture into Trans-Am racing in the late-1980s with its 200 Quattro? Conventional wisdom said you needed a Ponycar with big V8 horsepower and rear wheel drive, but here came Audi with a sedan sporting four wheel drive and a turbocharged 2.1 liter five cylinder engine. The world quickly learned that putting 500+ horsepower to the ground through twice the wheels made sense, especially when the weather was less than optimal. Steve Ziotkin reintroduced us to that marvelous turbo-chirp sound.

We’re going to let Greg Johnson and his ‘69 Chevrolet Camaro say goodbye from the 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for us. His black Camaro looked sinister. The multiple front driving lights giving a clue to the cars history as an endurance racer at venues such as Sebring and Daytona. At the top of the windshield, mounted on the roof is an orange light designed to identify the car to its pit crew during the nighttime hours of an endurance event.

MEADOW BROOK 2015: ST. JOHN’S CONCOURS OF AMERICA!

- Jumat, 31 Juli 2015 No Comments

The Meadow Brook folks in Motown have the formula for success on the show field. Kat Kurkov takes us up front and personal.

If you take rare automobiles, add thousands of hours of restoration, then add preshow activities combined with perfect weather in an idyllic setting, the result can only be the 2015 Concours d'Elegance of America held in Plymouth, Michigan.

Still referred to as “the new Meadow Brook” where it was held for 32 years, this concours has a history of getting things “just right”. There was a well–rounded mix of automobiles spanning the dawn of automobile history to some of the supercars of today.

Kevien Adell, left, from Bloomfield Hills, MI brought just a few of the 60 cars in his collection. He has been able to drive his ‘70 Plymouth Superbird, below, after having it undergo a yearlong restoration with “Mopar Kevin”. Although not a daily driver, this car is still driven on the streets. He was joined by his Dad, Donald Haranczak, and his ‘71 Plymouth Road Runner. Adell rounds out his collection with an original Batmobile, a Trans-Am from Smokey and the Bandit and the infamous Ferrari from Ferris Buller’s Day Off.

Nothing epitomizes spirit of the Sixties more than a ‘68 Shelby GT500 KR. This Mustang is unusual in that out of the 4,450 made only 1,053 were KR fastbacks and 517 convertibles and just 150 had four-speeds and only two came with factory air. Ken Nagel, Plano, IL, bought this restored Candy Apple Red convertible in 2009.The legendary Costilow & Larson CSX2093 Cobra, below, converted to Dragonsnake when new, terrorized east coast drag racing.

From the Super/Stock spotlight to a swamp in Louisiana, this Dodge has seen it all. Driven by Bill “Mavrick” Golden and Stanley Ward, it won 134 of 135 races entered in a three-year period, making it one of the winningest cars in drag racing. As “Maverick” went on to greater fame with his “Little Red Wagon” the Dodge fell from grace. When the shell was discovered seven years ago, the VIN numbers were run and certified by Chrysler. Irwin Kroiz owns this First Place Concours winner.

This ‘63 Chevrolet Impala from Sterling Heights, MI was built in Flint for the NHRA Nationals. With aluminum hood, fenders, grille and brackets and 427 engine, this Z11 Lightweight was tough to beat. When equipped with a stroked 512-inch big-block, Larry Wilson drove it to a number of records, clocking 132 mph in the low-10s.

Best known for his Dodge “Honker” Super/Stocks and FX Lightweights, Bud Faubel also competed in a rare B/FX ’62 Chrysler 300 powered by a big-block with short ram tube induction. Jim Kramer is the current owner.

Singlefinger Garage/speed shop didn’t just bring cars from the Three Dog Garage - they brought the whole garage! One of the standouts in their lineup is a ‘34 Ford Coupe, owned by Don Ferguson and featured in a recent Rodder’s Journal. In 1951, this Flathead-powered three window coupe ran 138 mph at the El Mirage dry lakes! This car was painstakingly restored from historical photographs, down to the unusual graphics up front. Ultra-rare '69 Trans-Am convertible, below, was a big attraction, as was another late-model Pontiac Trans-Am with a Kammback station wagon conversion.

Like other concours, St John’s brings together people and cars. Yet the depth of each class is amazing. It showcases how automotive innovation evolved, and how it is now living history; sometimes carefully maintained in its original state, other times restored using cutting edge technology like 3-D printers. There is something for everyone interested in power mixed with beautiful design. But there is more than first meets the eye. National charities like JDRF whose mission is to find a cure for Type1 diabetes, and local charities such as Forgotten Harvest and the College for Creative Studies also benefit.

INDY: BRICKYARD VINTAGE RACING INVITATIONAL!

- Sabtu, 20 Juni 2015 No Comments

SVRA enjoyed a second year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with its Vintage Racing Invitational. Mike Matune was trackside for the Chronicles.

Clark Howey’s ‘66 Corvette won its class at Daytona. After more than 20 years and numerous owners, it is once again owned and raced by Howey. So much more than just racing, the event encompasses a car auction, car show, Jaguar exhibit and autocross and an enactment of the very first event at the Speedway - 1909 hot air balloon race. To us, the signature event is the Indianapolis 500 Legends Celebrity Pro-Am that matches 33 former Indy 500 starters with vintage drivers in stunning examples of American Muscle. ’65 Mustang, right, of Davey Hamilton & Frank Marcum awaits the race on the pre-grid. Hamilton is an eleven-time 500 starter with three Top 10 finishes to his credit.

Pro Bob Lazier and Amateur Jim Caudle in Caudle’s ‘68 Corvette, below, took home the victory and bragging rights. They bested all comers and survived an active race; our congratulations on their well-earned victory.

Set appropriately at the “Yard of Bricks” a group photo shows the 33 Pro-Am teams along with distinguished guests like Honorary Stewards Janet Guthrie & Tom Sneva. As you walked through the crowd gathered in pit lane, you were struck by how close the racing community is and how much respect they have for each other.

Racing included events run on both Indy’s road course and oval. Here James Webb’s March 86C looks right at home at speed on the oval. This car finished second in the 1986 Indy 500 driven by Kevin Cogan.

Cogan was beaten in 1986 by Bobby Rahal in this March 86C. Rahal caught and passed Cogan very late in the race on a restart. It’s owned and driven by Patrick Ryan, shown here on Indy’s road course.

Casey Putsche takes his tube frame Corvette through the hard left-hander at the end of the back straight.  Putsch’s car has history as a GT1 racer. The car is crewed by the Genius Garage, a group of engineering students getting valuable hands on, real world experience. Their collective efforts would net a fourth place finish in one of the Group 10 races in the car’s inaugural competition appearance.

Before Ike Keeler returned it to the configuration of its Trans-Am glory days, his Old’s Cutlass followed a path so common with vintage racers. It had been a front running car campaigned by Darin Brassfield. Then it worked its way through a re-body or two as it moved to other teams in Trans-Am and eventually into SCCA Club Racing. Today it displays all of the features of its initial configuration including a ChevyV-8, tube frame and fiberglass “silhouette” body.

Janet Guthrie and fellow female racing pioneer Lyn St. James were there, competing in the Pro-Am. Adding to the historical perspective of women in motorsports was this car, Donna Mae Mims’ Yenko Stinger (YS-085). Today it is owned and raced James Schradt.

With a production life of something like 65 years and with over 20 million produced, you would think the sight of a Type 1 VW “Beetle” in competition would be more common. Victor Frazzell has taken on that challenge, actively racing his 1968 version. The car pays tribute to a VW raced in the under 2.5-liter Trans-Am in period by Allen Treuhaft.

Chris MacAllister’s Cobra is steeped in history. Bearing chassis number CSX 2323, the car is one of a handful of FIA roadsters raced in FIA events in pursuit of the World Manufacturers Title. Making its debut in the Targa Florio driven by Grant & Gurney, the car would next appear with Ireland at Spa before a crash at the Nurburgring by Enzo Arena would end its Shelby racing career. Rebuilt, it soldiered on back in the U.S. at Daytona, Sebring and around the Southeast in the SCCA.

Tom Weglarz and friends built this Camaro in 1981 for the Kelly American Challenge. It started as a 1970.5 Camaro body of undetermined origin and was assembled using pieces from GM racers of the Trans-Am era. Updated to 1981 body style, it has fiberglass panels from the then current IROC Camaros. Interesting is that in its post-Kelley racing life, it ran the “Hot Rod Power Tour” with Olds power and was featured in the November 2010 issue of Hot Rod. Today it’s powered by a 331-inch Chevy.

Benneton would finish third in the 1997 Formula 1 Constructor’s Championship behind Williams and Ferrari with its Renault powered B197 chassis driven by Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi. At Indy, we see Brian French in his B197 hugging the curb on another quick lap around the circuit.

PONTIAC TRANS-AM: LAST SURVIVING PROTOTYPE!

- Selasa, 18 November 2014 No Comments

The only surviving Firebird Trans-Am prototype is alive and well thanks to a dedicated musclecar enthusiast, blogs Stephen Cox.

In the autumn of 1968, Pontiac Motor Division General Manager, John DeLorean, recruited California customizer Gene Winfield to create the “ultimate Firebird”. Winfield was flown to Pontiac Engineering in Michigan, then given a pair of brand new ‘69 Pontiac Firebirds and a free hand to re-design them as he saw fit. When Winfield's highly anticipated cars emerged from his secret, double-bay workshop at Pontiac, America's legendary Trans-Am was born.

One of those prototypes has been lost. The other – the sole remaining original Trans-Am – has been found. Its re-discovery is a remarkable story.

After serving as Winfield's test platform, the car reverted back to Pontiac where it was used as a media test car. The prototype was featured in magazines including Car Life, Hot Rod, Car Craft and Motor Trend. Unable to sell it through normal channels due to its heavy modifications, Pontiac chose to send the prototype to racer Jerry Titus. His new team, TG Racing, was converting to Pontiac products for the upcoming season.

As it turned out TG Racing purchased six cars from Royal Pontiac. Five were turned into racecars; the prototype was kept by the Titus family for personal use.

After Titus' untimely racing death in 1970 the car was sold and its identity lost while changing hands many times over the following 40 years. Car collector Curt Richards, Lexington, KY responded to an online advertisement and went to see the car. It was showing its age but still retained most of its original body parts. After several more weeks of research, Richards was convinced that this car was indeed the Trans-Am prototype. He purchased the car and has spent the last two years validating its identity and restoring it. It was completed last week.

For the first time in more than 40 years, Pontiac’s Trans-Am prototype will be revealed to the public at the 2014 Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals (MCACN) in Rosemont, IL on November 22nd. Richards will appear at the event as a special guest to greet the public and speak with the automotive media.

Stephen Cox is a racer and co-host of TV coverage of Mecum Auctions (NBCSN)

HEACOCK CLASSIC GOLD CUP: VIR!

- Sabtu, 04 Oktober 2014 No Comments
SVRA wraps up with 2014 vintage racing schedule with its premier event at Virginia International Raceway. Mike Matune brings us  highlights.

As Summer fades and the racing season begins to wind down, SVRA draws us to Southern Virginia and Virginia International Raceway (VIR) for the annual Heacock Gold Cup. Here Mike Fisher, top, sweeps under the vehicle bridge in his ex-Derek Bell Speedvision Cup Audi S4.

Peter Dunn exits Turn 11 in his Morgan, above, chasing the other Group 3 runners down the back straight. This gives you a better feel for VIR with its meticulously manicured building and grounds. The 3.27-mile circuit never stops moving whether it’s up and down or side to side, mixing high and low speed sections.

We had to feature Tom Briest’s Porsche 914/6 when  we heard that the Porsche 914 would be celebrated at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance this coming March. At long last, the oft-maligned Porsche will get its due.

It made us wonder, when will the other stepchildren in Porsche’s lineage, the 924/944/968, achieve similar recognition? Here is Kurt Fazekas’ 944 Turbo. It is one of seven lightweight Turbo 944s constructed to compete in the Escort/Playboy Series, where it was originally

driven by Kurt’s father, Dale.

SVRA President Tony Parella ran his Corvette in Group 6 at VIR. He split duties with Dave Nicholas who had “holed” a piston in his very quick MGA, Honey Bee at Watkins Glen and was without a mount. This is Tony in Turn 5.

Tom Shelton’s Lola T70 brings back memories of the USRRC/Can-Am days. My eye was drawn to the “Cox” sticker on the car. Cox was a hobby manufacturer who figured prominently in the slot car craze of the 1960s. They produced some great scale models of significant racecars of the time and sponsored Jim Hall’s Chaparrals.

There are many opinions about what constitutes the Golden Era of American racing and there are many candidates for the title. Among them is the SCCA’s Trans-Am series of 1966-1972, where manufacturers along with top builders and drivers ran flat out on circuits across the U.S. & Canada. Ivey Shannon’s converted street Camaro invokes memories of the early Trans-Am.

Sean Ryan’s ‘71 Camaro was originally built and campaigned by Frank Search in both the Trans-Am and SCCA sedan racing, it has been brought back to life by Ryan and his father who race under the banner of Unfair Advantage Racing.

The current SCCA Trans-Am series shares the program with SVRA’s vintage racers at VIR.

Cars are divided into three classes. Jason Berkeley’s Corvette waits to be teched behind

Tommy Kendall’s Challenger.

The top of the Trans-Am class are the TA cars, tube frame racecars powered by 850-plus horsepower carbureted V8s. While car specifications are limited in some ways, the use of one-off components and exotic materials are allowed. Here is the overall VIR Trans-Am winner Paul Fix in his Corvette.

The next rung on the Trans-Am ladder is the TA2 cars. These are also V8-powered tube frame cars, but with component design, manufacturers and costs controlled. Bodies and engines match, with power limited to the 500-horsepower range. This is Tommy Kendall’s Challenger. The car’s paint scheme is reminiscent of the Sam Posey-Ray Caldwell Autodynamics Challenger of the 1970 Trans-Am season.

This brings us the TA3 cars, divided into A (American Muscle) and I (International). These cars retain more of their production car roots and comply with SCCA GT2 or NASA American Iron rules. Horsepower and power-to-weight ratio are further controlled. Thomas Ellis’s Mustang illustrates cars common to this class.
