FORD FOCUS ST: A TRIO OF SPEED STARS!

- Rabu, 06 Februari 2013 No Comments

Ford Racing, Ken Block & fifteen52 join forces on Project ST.

Debuting at the Chicago Auto Show tomorrow, a trio of hardcore high-performance Ford Focus hatchbacks is sure to capture the hearts of enthusiasts. One of the three different Focus ST builds; the TrackSTer kicks off the Project ST program. This program showcases a relationship between tuner fifteen52, Ken Block and Ford.

“The project goal is to make today’s hot hatch King – Ford Focus ST – even hotter,” says Brad Beardow, fifteen52 co-owner.  “TrackSTer is a Focus ST that is destined to at home on a road course as well as on the way to a road course. Using only top-quality engine, transmission and suspension components, TrackSTer is designed to appeal to the hardcore performance enthusiast.”

“Teaming up with fifteen52 for this project was an obvious choice for me,” said Ken Block. “They’ve got a great understanding of what’s hot in the small car performance marketplace, both from style and performance perspectives. With the TrackSTer, we’ve worked closely with both Ford Racing and Mountune (engine build) to put together a potent package that blends both on-road and on-track performance. I can’t wait to get this car out on a track and put it through its paces.”

CORVETTE RACING: THE BOOK!

- Minggu, 27 Januari 2013 No Comments

David Kimble, best known for his incredible automotive cutaway art, has written an outstanding book on the racing history of America’s Sports Car.

Just when you thought every book that could be written about the Corvette had already been written, along comes CORVETTE RACING, The Complete Competition History from Sebring to Le Mans. And, it’s been written by David Kimble, one of the last remaining masters in the art of precision, detailed airbrush automotive illustration. If you’ve been a reader of the top sports car magazines, chances are you’re familiar with his work.

Going on seven decades, Corvettes have bested and embarrassed some of the world’s greatest marques at top events at major racing circuits: Le Mans, Daytona, Nurburgring, Sebring and Laguna Seca to name a few. It all started with Corvette godfather Zora Arkus-Duntov and the Corvette, dubbed “The Real McCoy,” he raced in 1956 at Sebring.

No one-trick pony, Corvettes have excelled and thrilled fans for decades at hill climbs, drag strips, on the Trans-Am circuit and in GT competition worldwide. Kimble captures the essence of Corvettes at speed in words, rare photos and cutaway illustrations. He’s had access to GM’s historical photo archives and has unearthed images that even I, as the Founding Editor of VETTE magazine, had no knowledge of.  Corvette Grand Sport (1963) and '60 Corvette at Le Mans, above. Many are from consummate racing photographer Richard Prince, who has covered Corvette racing for Chevrolet.

Packed with 256 pages and 155 color and 95 black & white images, Kimble takes us from 1956 at Sebring to 2012 at Le Mans, above, and the ALMS circuit; from fledgling solid-axle Corvettes to the latest, highly-sophisticated endurance racers. He has an engineering background, studying physics at Pasadena College, starting as a draftsman/artist on laser projects for the Navy in the early-1960s and did work on an Indy 500 Chaparral in 1966. Road & Track in the mid-1960s was the first magazine to publish his automotive cutaway art. Cutaways of Z06 Corvette and C7 Corvette engine cutaways, below, were done by Kimble for Chevrolet.

Published by Motorbooks, CORVETTE RACING is a must-read for Corvette owners; enthusiasts and car guys who want to celebrate America’s (race-winning) Sports Car. Check it out at,

FORD GT: WORLD’S FASTEST STREET CAR!

- Jumat, 18 Januari 2013 No Comments

Street-legal ’06 Ford GT is first car in full street trim to break the 250-mph Standing Mile; hits 283 mph and sets Guinness World Record.

Records are made to be broken and nobody knows that better than Johnny Bohmer, West Palm Beach, FL, who set the Guinness record as well as the IMRA (International Mile Racing Association) Street Legal Class record. That was on October 16, 2012 on the Space Shuttle runway at the Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach, FL. This spring he plans on running his twin-turbo GT for the record again; this time the target is 300 mph!

“It took me 21 seconds to cover the standing mile, hitting 283.232 mph, and burning five gallons of fuel,” said Bohmer, below, owner of Performance Power Racing, a high-tech high-performance tuning and fabrication facility in West Palm Beach.

A turbocharging and exotic materials specialist, Bohmer feels that his almost 3,900-pound, 1,800-horsepower twin-turbo GT has a potential top speed of 340 mph and has already covered the Standing Mile at over 283 mph. In street trim with fully functional air conditioning and audio system, the mega-powerful GT can sprint to 150 mph in 7.4 seconds and generate 1.3-Gs lateral acceleration, according to its builder.

While Bohmer tows his GT in an enclosed trailer to competition events, he often drives it to local area shows. And as you can imagine, turns a lot of heads – especially when they see the drag chute and BADD GT license plate!

NOTE: Special thanks to my Facebook friend Robert Brown for supplying the photo of the GT's rear with chute taken at a local show and some information about Johnny Bohmer’s BADD GT.

CORVETTE STALKER: CHANNELING THE LOTUS 7!

- Minggu, 13 Januari 2013 No Comments

‘It’s a street-legal rocket sled that goes around corners like a Shifter Kart,’ says Sarasota Café Racer Mario Parker, describing his 1,550-pound, Corvette-powered silver & blue Stalker.

Mario Parker has spent his career in the automotive industry, first as an engineer, followed by senior management gigs at carmakers including Roush Performance. He knows fast cars and is an experienced weekend warrior. A Ferrari owner, Parker was looking for a serious four-wheeled adrenaline rush that he could track on weekends as well as drive around town. Long a fan of the original Lotus 7, he had been searching for a car that offered iconic Lotus styling with updated mechanicals and, most importantly, a modern, powerful V8 engine. It never fails to draw a crowd, below.

Enter the Stalker, locally built by Brunton Auto, incredibly fast, and best of all, available with a V8. Not just any V8, a modern fuel-injected Corvette powerplant. Parker’s caged Corvette-powered (all-aluminum Corvette LS V8) Stalker has been engineered to go fast on the track and designed to be street legal! His pal Bob Berube owns a graphite & yellow Stalker SS, below, fitted with a supercharged 90-degree Buick V6, an engine popular in late-model Buick Park Avenues and Regal Gran Sports.

In 2001, Dennis Brunton started Brunton Auto with a single tube-framed prototype he designed and engineered, dubbed Stalker. Since then the Lotus 7-influenced Stalker and now SuperStalkers powered by supercharged GM V6s and V8s have been rolling out of the modest St Petersburg, FL shop. In July of 2010 Scott Minehart, the Stalker’s chassis engineer, took over running the business.

Brunton has marketed more than 150 Stalkers - basic and roller kits to ready-to-run turnkey models . The keys to the Stalker’s success: A high-level of quality and outstanding performance at an affordable price. Basic kits start at approximately $10,000 and turnkey cars can run from mid-$30,000 to mid-$40,000.

Dennis Brunton’s original Stalker Classic is Lotus 7-styled, showcasing vintage styling cues with old-fashioned hot rod ingenuity. It uses widely available and affordable parts from popular GM vehicles. The spindles and rear axles are sourced from Chevy S10s trucks and then modified. Most of the components not manufactured by Brunton Auto can be purchased from local auto parts stores or speed shops.

What makes the Stalker unique is that you can build or buy one with a variety of powertrains, all easily accessible and affordable. In its most economical form, a Stalker can be built with a GM 2.8/3.4-Liter 60-degree V6, fitted with an aftermarket intake manifold and carburetor for typically 160 horsepower. Next up is GM’s supercharged 3.8-Liter (3800) 90-degree V6, below, that originally came in Buicks, Pontiac GTP and Monte Carlo SS models. When fitted with Brunton’s EFI, these engines generate 260 rear wheel horsepower and close to 300 pound-feet of torque over a broad rpm range.

Stalker buyers/builders who believe that there’s no substitute for cubic inches, can opt for the modern Corvette/Camaro aluminum LS1 to LS7 series V8s, above. Stock horsepower ratings go all the way up to over 500 with ground-pounding torque. A variety of new crate engines are available from GM. Large displacement LS-engined Stalkers are not for the faint of heart!

Stalkers are true road & track machines: Bob Berube in his Stalker SS on the road and Christian Banker, Sneaky Cat Racing in his E/Modified Stalker V6 at speed, above! The Stalker’s front suspension is double wishbone with adjustable coil-over shocks and GM rack and pinion steering. Front brakes can either use stock GM or a Wilwood aluminum hub and four-piston caliper upgrade. Rear suspension is a five-link live axle with adjustable coil-over shocks and choice of drum or disc brakes.

The Classic Stalker R was engineered for those who covet Lotus 7 styling but want modern racecar-level suspension with desirable street-ride qualities. A more comfortable Stalker XL model is four-inches wider than the Classic, yet shares Brunton M-Spec chassis-suspension.

SHORT TRACK RACING: EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO LOSE!

- Selasa, 23 Oktober 2012 No Comments

Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luck; some nights I call it a draw, blogs broadcaster/racer Stephen Cox.

There are three rules in short track racing: Number 1, Don't Give Up The Inside Groove; Number 2, Survive At All Costs. And Number 3, Never forget Rules 1 and 2. This is doubly important when it comes to the really short tracks, like Lake County's beautiful 1/5th-mile oval in Painesville, Ohio, four of which would fit in your back yard!

You have to stay with the leaders, avoid the inevitable wrecks, keep the fenders on your truck and drive like a wild banshee in the last few laps. After 20 years of racing, I should know this. But I forgot it during Sunday afternoon's 125-lap ARCA Truck Series season finale, and I paid the price.

Following six hours of restless sleep at the Red Roof Inn, I arrive at the Lake County’s micro-track on Saturday with an unstoppable one-song marathon playing over and over in my head. Ever had that happen? I believe it to be a mild form of insanity. The song was Fun's “Some Nights.” I should be grateful. It could have been the Village People!

Practice begins and thanks to my crew, above, the #20 Boschett Timepieces/Ed & Co. Racing Supplies truck is reasonably good right off the trailer. In only our third race together, we're really beginning to gel.

Team owner Ed Yoak likes to pretend like he's always grouchy, but he's too nice a guy to be very convincing. John Buck and Jerry Young won lots of races together in the 80's and act like an old married couple. Willard Yoak works constantly and pays no attention to either of them.

Together they're an amazing bunch. I've been supremely confident in this crew's abilities since our 7th place miracle at Kil Kare Speedway in August.

Practice starts and the truck is quick but a bit loose. We change the Panhard bar and yank spring rubbers, getting faster every session. We're 3/10's off quick time even though we're on ancient tires while the frontrunners are on stickers. So far, so good.

An hour goes by. I try to switch my mental radio station to Atlanta Rhythm Section's “I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight.” I fail. Maybe I need a hair band. Our high hopes are dashed in qualifying when the truck doesn't like the new tires and goes loose. I chase my tail all over the track and qualify 6/10th's slower than we practiced. Disaster. We'll start 12th. Now we have to fight our way to the front on a tiny, 1/5th- mile oval in Sunday's race. This won't be pretty.

Dinner is a plate of Red Lobster's coconut fried prawns at 11 pm. I type my last phone entry on Sopwith Motorsports' Facebook page and go to bed.

Race day begins sunny and cold. In our ten-minute warm up session, we drop the Panhard bar and find some grip in the truck's rear end. We get all of the speed back that we lost during qualifying. The truck works really well below the white line at the bottom of the track. See Short Track Rule Number 1!

Driver introductions begin over the public address system. A kid on the front row of the grandstands waives to me. Aha, a potential fan. I grab an ARCA Truck Series t-shirt and toss it to him over the catch fence as I walk to my truck. I don't have many fans and can't afford to waste these opportunities. Besides, it was ARCA's tee.

I try to switch songs again as I buckle into the cockpit, this time to Whitesnake's “Here I Go Again,” but can't get past the opening keyboard solo. The green flag drops and I tag onto the tail of Levi Mansfield's #54 truck. Levi is stupid fast. I'll just follow him to the front, right?

Thirty laps go by. My master plan is working. Following Levi and the #21 of Brandon Huff, I work my way up to 9th position. Not setting any records, but hey, we're moving up.

I get past Brandon and am closing on Levi when the truck gets loose again. Overdriving the truck trying to stay ahead of Brandon, I spin myself out in Turn 1. My bad. The nose is dented but it still runs okay. John and Willard take the hood off. I hope Ed doesn't get mad. Instead of hustling the truck, I should have been taking it easy until the next Caution flag allowed me to pit and pull a spring rubber to tighten it up. I should know better.

See Short Track Rule Number 2!

Green flag again. The truck develops more oversteer every lap. I'm slowing down. Brandon is still behind me but I'm clearly holding him up now. I hug the white line and give him the outside. He doesn't want the outside; he wants the low groove. I don't blame him. But I'm not going to gift-wrap it. See Short Track Rule Number 1

Brandon finally punts me and I spin sideways. I don't think he meant to. He's a good guy and a great shoe. We're both sliding now and he can't stop in time. His truck hits me again, this time just behind the front left wheel. The steering column is pinched and the steering wheel will barely turn. The truck is not drivable and I have to make a pit stop.

John and Willard radio for me to kill the engine. After five minutes of inspection it's clear that our day is over. I climb out of the cockpit, do a painful TV interview and stand by myself along pit road thinking of Short Track Rule Number 3 while “Some Nights” still plays endlessly in my head. My first and only wreck of the entire season comes in the final race of the year. Go figure.

I should have been patient. I should have survived at all costs and waited for the race to come to me. Instead I abandoned the tried and true rules of short track racing and fouled up our day.

It's been two days now. Desperation sets in as I watch the last half of the race from the infield. The Village People is simply not an option, so I try Cinderella's “Gypsy Road.” Thank goodness. It sticks.

BONNEVILLE RACING TEAM 608: GO FAST – DO GOOD!

- Minggu, 29 Juli 2012 No Comments

Grassroots racers, the Jersey Boys run a Lakester and Roadster on the Salt Flats to raise money for, and awareness of, health-related charities.

Team 608, managed by Sarasota Café Racer Rob Gibby, above, in blue shirt, is a 100% volunteer, grassroots land speed racing team comprised of lifetime hot rodders and drag racers. They have been competing at Bonneville for more than a decade. Since 2006, Team 608 has raised and donated in excess of $95,000 for charities: Susan G. Komen For The Cure (Breast Cancer), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Autism Speaks.

Team 608 is bringing two cars with a total engine displacement of 841 cubic inches and 1,850 horsepower to Bonneville on August 11-17 for an assault on the record books and to raise money again for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The Dripps & Gibby ‘32 Ford Highboy that can run in E/Street or E/Gas Roadster will join Team 608’s Lakester at Speed Week. Veteran Bonneville racer Robin Dripps, a T. David FitzGibbon Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, owns this tube-framed, Brookville steel-bodied Roadster. Bob Dauernheim, below, team crew chief and owner-builder of the team’s Dauernheim-Biglow-Davis Lakester, is responsible for most of the Roadster’s metal fab work, from chassis mods and floor to its hood, cockpit tonneau, air box, water tank and roll cage. Its NACA hood louvers were designed and fabricated by Gordon Smith and Ernie Cabrera.

Co-Drivers are Robin Dripps and Rob Gibby.

Robin Dripps’ Highboy is powered by a naturally aspirated short-stroke 259 cubic-inch, 650 horsepower Chevy small-block, above, topped off with a pair Quick Fuel 850-cfm carburetors mounted on a custom Hogan intake manifold. Built by Ken Duttweiler, the highly sophisticated small-block utilizes a custom Dart low-deck-height block, Dart Little Chief canted valve heads and a Crower 2.55-inch stroke crank. Jesel and Comp Cams supplied the valve train, while ignition and data logging are by MoTec. Engine produces approximately 2.5-dyno horsepower per-cubic-inch and is redlined at 9,000-plus rpm. An air-shifted Jerico five-speed transmission and Speedway Engineering quick-change rear complete the powertrain.

Under the stunning steel body, painted by Jeff Davis’ Specialized Autocraft, is a custom chassis with an Indycar-style front suspension designed and machined by Hank Kleban and tuned by Chassis Dynamics’ Bob Cuneo. It features airfoil struts and coilovers, activated by bell cranks and mounted inside the engine compartment. Originally powered by an injected Bowtie Racing V6, the Dripps & Gibby Highboy has set two land speed records. Last year they switched to a V8 and, running in E/Gas, clocked 204.7 mph on the Salt.

In 1992 the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) honored Robin Dripps,’ above, teaching with its Distinguished Professorship Award and, in 1999 her book, The First House: Myth, Paradigm, and the Task of Architecture, received a Phi Beta Kappa award. Her work has been published and exhibited in the U.S., Europe and Asia. And she has been a regular at various Mile Runs and Bonneville for years!

“We are self-funded and self-sustaining with 100% of the money we raise going directly to charities. It’s our way of pursuing our passion for hot rods and racing, challenging the record books, and giving something back,” said Team 608 crew chief, Bob Dauernheim.  “Our mantra: GO FAST – DO GOOD!”

After setting the AA/FL (Fuel) record (290.49 mph) at Bonneville in 2009, Dauernheim’s Lakester, driven by Don Biglow, above, w/ Bob Dauernheim, was completely redesigned in 2011 to run on gas (AA/GL) and recently updated for Speed Week 2012. Bob Cuneo, designer and builder of the U.S. Olympic Team’s winning bobsleds, has been consulting with Rob Ida, builder of the Lakester’s body, to improve its aerodynamic qualities.

Tony Feil built the Lakester’s naturally aspirated, dry-sump-lubed 582 cubic-inch Chevrolet big-block style Dart engine, above. It features a Big M cast- iron block and Big Duke aluminum heads topped off with dual four-barrel carburetors. Latest dyno tests show approximately 2.1 horsepower per-cubic-inch on 114 octane racing gas! Last year the Lakester experienced some engine problems yet Biglow was able to clock 318 mph. This year the 15-to-1 compression engine has been rebuilt, fitted with larger carburetors and has been dynoed at approximately 1,200 horsepower.
